After bring away from the editor for a while, I loaded it up and it will not allow me to login to battle.net. It says that Battle.net is down for maintenance. Any ideas?

Umm.... after patching did did you allow the firewall rules? (windows will prompt you, but might depend on what firewall product you are using) ... you might have it integrated to virus scanner.
Some other random thoughts / ideas ...
Is a region showing it the dropdown box next to login button? If not try to select a region there ... ( if you happen to use CHINA locales this can be an issue).
If you use English, did you update locales in editor ? Patch 3.0 removed EN(UK). You should be EN(US) if you are english speaker. File->Preferences->General ... Locale item.
You might want to check File->Preferences->Battle.net ... and set "check for update when editor starts" if you have not used for a while.
Are you on a Mac? The editor on Mac is still pretty screwy after Patch 3.0 as far as i know.
Indeed when I reinstalled it I had mistakenly clicked no to the firewall let-thru but had gone back and corrected it. Just to check after you suggestion, I turned the firewall off completely and there is no change, it still says Battle.net is down for maintenance.
I checked the preferences and it is set to EN-US.
I have selected an area (where I am located) to no effect.

sometimes "the server" is on maintenance.. not to confuse with bnet
also,
it doesn't allow any map opening? sounds like you need to open the editor through the bnet app / after closing it and patching through there
also,
in the sc2 folder you have a log / access to the terminal, try it 'repair on demand" etc
also,
might be your locale? ads in enGB was slain and you might need to deal with a remnant of that change (again, patchiing, trying a "new map")
also, which version are you using 32 / 64?

Really strange.

I can open a LOCAL map, but nothing I have published to Battle.net because I cannot login.
My editor version is 3.1.2
Launching thru the Bnet yields the same behavior. I am currently doing a "scan and repair" thru the Bnet app.
I had it happen on a couple occassions and it was an editor version mismatch. A scan & re[pair should theoretically work. Otherwise, reinstall.

Scan and repair detected no issues? Reinstall is next up.
