I don't have time to make a graph right now, and I haven't gone through and collected the data on every map just yet, and the data is a bit imprecise.
However, it is interesting.
These figures use the principle of a "hit", which is one play by one person. If the map has 1,000 games in a month and there are 10 players in each game, that is 10,000 hits. On page 1-2 maps I assume that the game will be filled completely before it starts in 99% of games. The idea here is to find out how many times the loading screen is viewed overall.
I get my data from the combined global server statistics of www.sc2ranks.com. These numbers assume that every lobby is filled completely before the game starts.
If anyone knows of servers that a map is popular on that I don't list here (such as if Desert Strike suddenly becomes popular in KR/TW while I don't list it there), please notify me. Maps/regions with less than 150 games per month are exempt from these listings (otherwise Mafia, for example, would be listed on all 5 servers, which is misleading because it's only popular on three of them).
If you have the time, you should make this a dedicated thread and update it with new stats like a patch notes thread. I can see this being fairly helpful to people who want a quick way to gauge certain maps.
Their is a huge scale difference from the spot 1 and the last.
The top 3 maps are in fact ones which are pretty 'player inactive' maps, i.e. you sit back and perform very few actions. You'd expect an intense Dota or something to be rank #1?
Is this simply the nature and taste of people on the bnet or is the popularity system manipulating these figures/ranks?
Well, Squad TD has well over 5x the hours that Mafia has (worldwide), but only 1.5x the hits. That's where you see the "sit back and relax" effect.
It seems that Desert Strike and Squad TD get tons of mileage for their hours, while 1v1 Ops gets horrible mileage (1v1 ops is rank 3 on this chart but isn't even on page 1 of the popularity list).
Yeah I'm gonna need you to fax this to my secretary before the end of Q3. Also, you'll need to meet our representatives in Thailand and try and sell the deal over there.
I sincerely hope developers don't design their games around stuff like this. I can't stand games that are over 15 minutes after they start. I prefer long, drawn out game-play with a slow pace.
Of course, it depends on the type of game and the execution. I just hope that design isn't placed second after stuff like this.
Updated with more recent data from every server that I could find a particular map on.

It's interesting that the top 5 maps, making up probably around 80% of all custom map games, are all maps where you don't really do anything but watch.
Well, at least in Mafia people tend to type a lot. It's more active than you would think, judging by game length.
And the 1v1 Obs score is probably really inaccurate. You'll see why.
Based on the US statistics only, of all those top maps up there, the average game lengths are (per player; this includes the drop/leave rate):
Mafia: 23 minutes
1v1 Obs: 8.5 minutesâ™
SotIS: 2 hours 21 minutes
Desert Strike: 1 hour 18 minutes
Squadron TD: 59 minutes
Nexus Wars: 42 minutes
Hero Attack: 1 hour 9 minutes
â™ WHAT! Yeah, the game starts half-full a lot of the time, people drop, and there are a ton of leavers. If I assume that each lobby starts with 8 average, then it's 420,768 hits per month overall and 16 minutes per game.
These have to be wrong. Desert Strike always lasts around 12-20min, so I can only assume that you added up all players' playtime together.
But then you have 1v1Obs average game length being 8.5min, meaning that even if only 2 people join, they only stay for 4.25min max. Same with Mafia (isn't it like 10 player?), resulting in 2-3min per player if it's all added.
If it's not the sum of all player's playtime, then that's even worse. The average game length of DS is much shorter, and 2.5h SotIS just doesn't weigh up.
Formula used is (daily hours (on bnet) / (daily hits (monthly hits divided by 30) * average players per game)) * 60 (minutes per hour).
This formula is more accurate for games with fewer max. players and more overall players. The SotIS one is weird, 1v1 Obs seems fine at 16-20mins per game, the Mafia one is fairly accurate, and Desert Strike is rather high. I don't know what's causing the discrepancy.

Interesting :D. People should start selling space for advertising!
Congratz on Mafia :)
It's interesting thou that:
Is this simply the nature and taste of people on the bnet or is the popularity system manipulating these figures/ranks?
Apparently bnet players like to watch and see masses of units get destroyed w/ minimal micro involved.
That or DotA-style maps.

Alot of bnet'ers are happy to play a map through 50 levels and for 2 hours, even single player.
These bastards are what drive the pop system :p

Thanks DarkRevenantX.
I personally prefer long games that are played less often.

Bump for new thread title.
Another bump; added a graph to look at.
Bump: updated graph today

I usually alt-tab when I play my TD.
