Hey guys, I've been away from the mapster forums for quite some time now, and I was wondering if there was still an active community here. I know that a few years ago it used to be hopping around here, but now I feel as if the community has died off. Have they moved somewhere else, or have they just gone silent?
On a related note, is there still a high volume of players on the arcade? And has the popularity system improved much since 2012?
It's a mild community. Lotta cool terrainers who like to do a weekly contest.
There's quite a lot of people playing arcade, especially the popular maps. Popularity system isn't much different. There is a cool new feature, extension mods. You can make mods that people can play on any map in the custom games section (mostly melee maps). Though the popularity and search function for them is worse than the arcade, haha.
there is still some activity and we all hope (i assume we all do) that lotv will bring changes to the arcade, especially the popularity system. on a related note: the editor is going to be documented finally but nobody knows when. (source: inoffcial blizzcon arcade talk)
Well, everything is kinda quiet. Community-wise a bunch of people went to unity. Other disappeared. Mapnight revived and died again.
Arcade-wise Tyas recent map is getting plenty of ratings and climing Top Played list, a proof that the arcade is not as stagnant as some would belive, but then again, playing niche maps is just as hard as it was 3 years ago.
There were also suggestions of next RockTheCabinet contest being wc3-asset related so you might want to look into the recent wc3 asset release.
We'll probably get a surge of interest on LotV release, so stick around, make yourself at home.
It is an active community just people think this is dead because when you enter first think they see the top right forum old, very old treads with old, very old dates
The administrator's of the site are the ones dead and dont come up with new treads for the main page or dont care. But we are here still kicking it.
People are around, but more diffused. Also, I've noted that there tends to be 3 groups. You have the experienced people, the new people and the in between. The first group tends to help when they can, but often are working on large projects (myself being one of them, current project is 1 year in, will take another 1 to 1.5 years to complete). Second group is just figuring things out, and may ask questions, but not many, they are mostly experimenting and learning. Last group is the ones who tend to ask the most questions.
People can be found in IRC, in Skype groups or tied to specific projects.
Thanks for all of the info guys. I was mostly skeptical because I run across some of the sub-forums and I see really old posts (things that I actually read a year ago) - but it's good to know that people are still at it!
@FunkyUserName: Go I think blizzard will do something with it. They touched it up around the time HoTS came out so they'll probably try one more time to get it right. It's not really in the worst of spots - it's just not as conducive towards newer maps as it could be.
@DuckyTheDuck: Go I remember map-night! I was hoping it was still around, but I knew it'd end eventually. I saw they were doing an arcade spotlight thing on the front page, is that still going to be a thing or did that fizzle out too? If it is, do feature small maps as well as massive projects?
I think Blizzard does have plans for the arcade, but what those are is a mystery. Some think it's a hint of a shared arcade with Heroes of the Storm, though personally I think such a thing would've been announced a long time ago if it were real.
Either way there's a Blizzard-hosted wc3 mapping contest coming up soon and there will be a surge of activity here when that happens!

True, but Sinvicta's stream does an arcade night every Wednesday on twitch. 2 of the blizzard community managers tend to be there for an hour or two.
