Every average Starcraft player has hosted at least one private match, specially when the custom map is not popular. It's easy to host a game, invite a few friends and start. However, many people still don't know that private matches DO NOT increase the map's popularity.
Private matches hurt map makers because it keeps their maps with low popularity while people are constantly playing them. Although I am a map maker, I'm not speaking just for myself. This is indeed happening to my iCJug 1v1+Obs maps that are not on first page because 90% of the games are private, but the same is happening to many other maps (as Mephs' Smashcraft).
So, please, whenever you host any custom map on Battle.net, always, ALWAYS click on "open to public" before start a game (even if the lobby is already full). This will make the makers happy and will help to promote the map, so more people can play and more map updates can come. Unless you really hate the map and don't want it popular, then you are allowed to not open to public.
Put it in your loading screen. This forum is not the advertizing platform you need. Many people here are aware of this and most players won't look here.

This.
I always click on public just before joining, but I should remember people on my loading screen, too.
Need to advertise this on all the maps. Also nobody really plays private matches on smashcraft. Couple weeks ago I was looking for games and no one would inv they just said to join pub. That's how some groups do it. Since it's hard to find a group some communities are actually waiting a long time for that random pub to join.

Good to know.

I'll do that too once I stop advertising my maps.
Can't you disable private games in your variants?
Don't think so :S.
I made one for map makers to put on their maps. I'm adding them on iCJug.
Note to everyone:
If I find out that you start a custom game without opening to public, I will virtually slap you in the face.
Just a heads up.
Great to be back and part of the community again!
No wonder my maps where always so low. i kept making private matches with my friend and my maps popularity never went up. i fix this from now on.
I think we should note that "opening to public" != "letting more people in" in those charts.
If you make a generic one, I'll be glad to use it with the rest of the people.
