Melodramatic title aside, I've seen sooo many complaints about the popularity system since it was introduced in the beta, and I've voiced (yelled) my hatred for it on more then one occassion. But all this constant "yeah man, shit sucks" isn't getting us anywhere. We need to make an organized statement to show blizzard that this system really does suck, and instead of telling us to "lrn2advertise" they need to fix it. So I'm gonna officially propose an idea I had in one of the "ihatethissystem" topics.
Map-makers of the various communities should all submit a map that is exactly 5 minutes long, and involves... nothing. Examples are each player spawns with a marine trapped in a box, and can do nothing. Or players start with a nexus and nothing else. These maps that can't be played would then be boosted, either by bots or volunteers, until the entire first page, and hopefully the second, consists of nothing other then these maps. Every map will have the description "Bring back Bnet 1.0 hosting" or something similar, to get our point across. Blizzard said they like going into the custom games and seeing what the communities made, so let's show them.
I know the likelyhood of this ever getting done is slim to none, but sitting around ranting about the broken system isn't accomplishing anything. We should atleast try to organize, since we all hate it, we should all try to get rid of it. So if you're interested in this little protest, just post here, maybe lay out your plans on how you want to participate.
Popularity system isn't good for anyone, this is a way to protest that system without breaking any rules or anything. Showing blizzard that quite a few people take exception to their broken system. We wont be vulgar or anything, just an organized protest. I mean, you rather us sit here and let them walk all over us, ignoring our pleas for them to fix their system, and instead having them tell us to advertise more? Honestly? I'd rather take a stand then be some big companies whipping boy.
What'll probably happen is they'll have to have several technicians ban and whatnot, meanwhile the bnet team is chugging away at the features we want anyway.
Um... no they're not, if they were chugging away at the features we wanted, I wouldn't have suggested this. Adding a few new things to editor doesn't change the fact that our maps will never be played because of this broken system. And they have not even hinted that they're gonna fix it.
Besides, what could they ban us for? They never said our maps had to meet a minimum content quota for upload.
Don't you think they will ban everyone? It can have 5000 people doing it. They will ban all of them for cheating.
Blizzard Policy says that your account can be closed if you actions "Is otherwise considered inappropriate for the game world"
Since they determine what is the game world, it's the same to say that they can ban your account for any reason they want and you can't do anything about it because you installed the game, you agreed that you wouldn't do anything "inappropriate for the game world."
How's it cheating? If the map's only five minutes long, so we enjoy the map, they're gonna start banning people for playing a certain type of map now? If they did that, it kinda proves my point that they're assholes and have fallen from grace. The fact that people are afraid of getting banned for this alone proves my point. On WC3 you wouldn't be afraid to host an empty map with a name conveying a message. Sigh, I really do hate Blizzard now days :/
ban you no, take away your map making privelages on bnet yes... when they do fix it your unable to publish and everyone else is happy... but you again....
Seriously... a well written non bitchy petition on their forums where it takes in user suggestions would probably be more effective, but reallys its only the handful of map makers this affects not the 80% of players
Sigh, you guys are just showing me more of a reason to hate Blizzard :/ Meh screw it, they'll never fix the system and the community will just continue to accept that, another game ruined by big corporations :/
A completely blank map, or a map containing an advertisement, would be in violation of policy. I like the other thread's idea of making the deliberately subpar map, Popularity Wars. A 2 player map lasting exactly 5 minutes.
Could make it 2 minutes of unskippable text explanations about having to earn popularity to get your map playable on battle.net 2.0, followed by 3 minutes of mediocre gameplay.
Make a popularity leaderboard, where you earn 1 popularity point for every 5 minute game you sit through.
Make the few minutes of core gameplay be something that seems like it could be fun, with actual meaningful strategic choices, except that "2 players" and "5 minutes" are clearly the best choices for your map project, and that the 13/15 map genres that are not income wars or TD are all blatantly underpowered in every way.
Now, you've got a 5 minute joke map with a pretty clear sarcastic comment, that I think quite a few people from around here would enjoy hosting legitimately. Request a front page review, with instructions on how to find and host the map, and watch magic ensue. =)

This is what my plan entailed. I didn't mean EVERY map had to be marines in boxes, those were just ideas. I meant that we flood the popularity system with shitty maps that express how bad the popularity system is.
And I doubt they would ban anyone, for example look at some maps with the descrption "Completely devoid of any description whatsoever." Not much more into these maps either, and they aren't banned.
And since you went on the wc3 map topic, played a map named Attack of the Niggers, great stuff lol. Didn't see the creator of that banned.
WC3 was when we were free to make whatever we want, and play whatever we want, we should all strive to get those days back. Sure some may consider "Attack of the Niggers" offensive, but then don't play it. Some of the best maps I've ever played were quite offensive, or atleast under Blizzard's terms. Break the Condom, Attack of the Niggers, Porn Bound, they were all offensive, and damn fun.
Blizzard needs to get their fingers out of the pie we make, and let us just enjoy it. They need to seperate it, map publishing/popularity system for the kiddies who need to be sheltered, and the old way for those of us who can live with "Online interactions not rated by the ESRB". Honestly, if the publishing and popularity system was optional, alongside the old way, NOBODY would be complaining.

You realize that this also means that they could easily ban you for boosting..
If we did anything along these lines, i think a better idea would be to make actual playable maps that last 5-10 minutes with 2-4 players, make a LOT of those maps, all different though, but have all use the same bank file, get players to actually gain points for each game they finish, and give them a good reason to play again: more points unlock stuff.
If we did something like that, where there are actual fun maps to play, there is absolutely no reason to ban us - we provided short good maps that coincidentally took up the first 2 pages of bnet AND mock the popularity system.
Of course, every map will have mockeries of the popularity system in every way possible. I think the name "popularity wars" should be in each map with an appropriate suffix :)
some ideas:
very short TD, tower upgrades are unlocked by "popularity wars points", and spawns are increased accordingly
Some Hero-based maps (defenses, wars, etc.) in which your hero is saved, and gets ability/talents/items based on the PWP (popularity wars points)
A tug map, which again gives bonuses for PWP

Why AotN never caught on we will never know, but blizzard better patent it just to be safe.

BTW Colt hasnt even purchased SC2 and as of yet has never logged on to bnet since beta.......
Disregard all his complaints against the pop system....
For everybody else.... Blizz has already said they will be making changes to the popularity system....
Crying on sc2mapster will not help the situation. Your time would be better spent looking for people to help you test your map on a consistent basis.
Even if all of you who hate the pop system pool together and try to manipulate the system you wont get on the first page unless people enjoy your map.
