There's probably already a thread about this somewhere on the forum, but I don't want to necro it anyway.
The question is simple: Will the marketplace/arcade work to revitalize SC2?
Personally, I think the current restrictions would make it impossible to work (current = last announced). If they just go and let everyone sell their maps, we would see a drop on quality for sure, or just pretty much everyone wanting money, thus making people play less. They could charge you money for publishing maps, too, just like the D3 Real Money Auction House, making it too risky to try to get profit.
Whatever the direction they take, I don't think it will work. Your opinions?
Just ignore the money aspect and hopefully enjoy a better custom map system. There will always be good maps for free.
I won't buy sh!tty maps and I guess nobody would do it, if he knows that a map sucks quality wise.

If your map is terrible and costs money, nobody will play it and only like 4 people would actually buy it and then give it a 0 rating and then it will be doomed forever at the bottom of a huge list with no-making-effort maps (think: I-have-a-zealot-RPG where you can a-click to kill 10 preplaced zerglings and then you die vs an overpowered Kerrigan).
But still, the market place is a way to give professionals a way to sell their creation. Some people will only map because they can make money with it.
If there will be campaigns with models, sounds, new storyline you might want to give them a small amount of money for their quality games.
I don't really know if I would sell my maps. It would be cool to gain money for the time invested, but I don't like forcing players to buy the map because I wouldn't want to be forced, too.
But if you just think about how much money some people pump into games like LoL to have skins for a hero that they play 10 times... that's insane, but they do it because they are addicted.
Sadly, it's hard to make money from the user's addiction on battle.net because you can only acquire money from new sells and not content additions like new graphics.
If I would ever sell some of my maps, I would want them to be sold at a low price.
I honestly feel it a positive to include a real money transaction.... Their a few reasons one it allows users to fully focus or compensate a team meaning maps can continue be updated... Dota, Warlocks, Tower Defenses all came from wc3 and made a profit in the game industry.... The core issue become that the current map limit stops a creative team from developing... Also I believe blizzard said their be some form of quality check to even make ur map sellable... I doubt they would allow every map to be sold for a profit... Id pretty much assume that ur map would have to be = in quality to sc2 dota... Meaning custom art sound ect.... Also at the end of the day price point and advertisement will really have everything to do with if ur map will be financially thesible... Either way blizzard doin it so users can sell content which ended up happenin in wc3 rpgs and diablo 2...

I doubt it. Reminds me of that Day9 episode about pro SC2 gamers. "We're all in it for the money, right?!". The revenue you can make with stuff like this is so hilariously tiny I don't think anybody will really go into it with the sole idea of "this is a business, I'm here to make money and don't care about the game".
"this is a business, I'm here to make money and don't care about the game". I study Game Design/Art for my Masters and this statement alone isn't the standard for industry... Most peopel don't go into the game industry to make just make moeny they do it because they enjoy games and care about the game... Just like Mozared said most people won't say that statement and if u don't care about the game you can't make money.... It hard to make moeny if u aren't passionate about what ur doin... My point was it can add a buffer where you could treat it like a 8 hour job and survive financially... vs havin to work and than come home and map on ur free time.... Either way we prob won't see great sold maps till we really get a better breakdown what blizzard wants/expects and less limits..
I could see in-game micro transactions for skin swaps could be very profitable for map makers and do nothing to effect existing games. Would be kind of fun actually.
