As we all know making a good map (a really good map) takes a lot of resourses - we think, learn, analyze, modify, we doing this in our "free from job and study" time... and i'm sure many dedicated themselves to this even more, if it pays off somehow. I think if we made money on it, it would enhance the quality and quantity of a great works.
Speaking for myself, I do cool maps and get pleasure from it, but i had to abandon the case about year ago because of the fact that it is, after all, work without benefits in material terms.
I read this old thread. 'been a long time since 2010, I would like to know, if things have changed? Can a SC2 map maker make a money from map making now?)
Can a SC2 map maker make a money from map making now?
Can you find someone who would be willing to pay for a map? :D
I imagine if you make a cool well-made map and some adults enjoy it for a lasting periods of time, there is a chance that a thought like "I've been enjoying this so much, I want to show some form of appreciation to the guy who made this" might pass some of them. If they're already using pay-pal on a daily basis and you provide an easy copy-paste link, then there is a miniscule chance that you'll get a few $$. I've also heard that you can make a bit of symbolic money from merchandise. Other than that it's still a zero expectations hobby mostly for enjoyment and perhaps learning.

Nah, i talking about a full campaign with an interesting plot, with good voice acting for the characters, with some spectacular video inserts. With a great trailers you can see before the release. With individually designed web-site on which we can see some representations of the characters and their biography describes some parts of the mythology of the story.
You can't properly publish campaigns to battle.net (You can't link the maps together), and if the maps aren't available for free, Blizzard can probably sue you for selling it. All you can really hope for is donations, and the others here in this thread already mentioned their experience with that...
Aside from all that, we occasionally have people posting paid assignment on these boards where a mapper can basically make anywhere from 10 to 100 bucks by creating a concept laid down by someone willing to pay. Doesn't happen often, but it occurs.
This sucks. Really powerful tool without much sense to use it except doing it as a hobby.
I hope that "Map marketplace" will rise someday, otherwise this is very pleasant but huge waste of time.
With the Arcade changes popping up I'm thinking we'll see some more on the subject as HOTS comes out - they seem to have the arbitrary stuff out of the way now.
I have yet to see a SC2 map worth having been paid for. There is no money in it and all good maps come from dedicated people who usually do it for free.

But if the market place is set up right it might work. The google play market place (since I have an android phone) works wonderfully. 99 cent games I don't think much about getting if the reviews are good and the game looks interesting, especially since it's pretty much a 1 click process to get them. Still, I don't think there are many maps on sc2 right now even worth 99 cents.
As a mapper who has been working on a map off and on for 2 years the prospect of actually making a little bit of money off of it would be great. I'm way too busy with school and life these days and putting that much time into something unprofitable is hard sometimes. But whenever I have an extreme amount of extra time and get a creative streak I get back into mapping no matter the cost.
I think the market place idea could increase the quality of maps if not abused. I don't wanna see a million maps costing 99 cents that are shit. Sadly, an ad system may fix that to push cheaper production maps to be free. But yeah, that would be horrible. Thirty seconds at the beginning of a map wouldn't be bad.
No it would not enhance the quality, you cannot do better then your own skill just because someone waves a dollar in your face... thats bullcrap people like to spout, but that is not true what so ever.... If you wanna make money from Modding, go make TF2 hats or go run a minecraft server....
Donations = good
Charging people to play, or charing people to win a game is horseshit after they already paid for the damn game, if Sc2 was Free 2 play, that would be different. but its not. If it was free 2 play then people who DID buy the game should get every map for free anyways -_-... there is a system that COULD be put in that I would support... but there is no intrest in it.
ALSO ADDING A DAMN DONATE BUTTON WOULD FREAKING GIVE THE SAME AMOUNT IF NOT MORE MONEY!!! BUT BLIZZARD WONT DO ANYTHING INTELLIGENT IT SEEMS ON SOME SUBJECTS>..
you can see where in sc2 activision marketing. has part of the decisions, Map Marketplace(its the reason for the pop system, its the WHOLE reason it was added... thats why I hate the map marketplace because ITS the reason we had and continue to have to suffer with that turd of a system that blizzard HAS to defend._

You'd be right, except that mappers don't get any of the money from people buying SC2 -.-

so? and you have no actual funds put into your project -_-, since your using assets from the game itself, you are using things they already paid for, so in the end you would be charging them for a set of rules. thats like me buying a Chess game, and then someone charging me to play it a different way :(

Quoted for truth. This in fact isn't the reason why the majority of recent improvements in the field of medicine has been made by research funded by pharmaceutical companies.

Exactly. Or like you buying a canvas and paint and having someone charge you for turning it into a painting.

Tainted, my project actually IS using a large number of custom assets we made, so please, just stop talking. Okay?
Furthermore, you're assuming that no more work goes into a map than making assets, which is essentially like saying that we shouldn't pay programmers since they don't make art.
Money didn't make those same people do better things, More equipment and new people did... More money != more skill, it just means you can find someone else to do it -_-....
ohhhkay nebuli, what would you like a hero cookie?
my map Uses quite a bit too... but they are (atleast the majority) based off blizzard assets, now I am not saying the custom models aren't great but there are far and few that aren't just modified WoL or WoW assets. And a programmer wouldn't start working on something hoping some way for him to make money would open up -_-...
@Taintedwisp: Go Ohhh boy, why so much hate? Do you realize you already posted all your arguments a hundred times and now you just bring havoc to all threads and touch the marketplace subject? I don't even know how the guys around here still have patience to debate it with you.

I apologize in advance for my ignorance.
no, he can't. end of story, for 3 years noone donated to my maps, which are quite popular on battle.net. Is it enough for you?
EDIT: Only real popular maps, such as Squadron Tower Defence or Aeon of Storm can bring some money to developer.

Right. And what about the "Arcade" thing? I heard there planned to implement some kind of a monetize system there.
Can you find someone who would be willing to pay for a map? :D

Map marketplace, we know about it as much as we knew 3 years ago. I don't think even blizz knows how and when they're gonna do it.
Also, prepare for a hate rant if taintedwisp comes by, he really despises marketplace idea, though I thought he might get tired of it by now. :D
Yeah, I'd love to earn even a few $ from what I do, but I really doubt so. Even mapsters using my assets wont pay for them XDDDD
Guys I just want to pay a few beers with my maps ;-)

Hell, i would pay for something like that.
