I don't think this will become obsolete. I feel like sites like this will be very important to help spread the word about games that people like or dislike.
The use of the game is only going to grow. Because before you were limited to people who wanted to play the maps by themselves or that were willing to go through the use of the map patcher AND coordinate it with they're friends.
Now although I do this and it is VERY easy to use, most arent willing to.
Now that it is allowed to play custom maps, everyone is going to be looking for something fun and new to play :)
Unless the publishing system allows for multiple screenshots, a detailed map description and lists of revisions. Sites like this will still be the best way to get quality maps. Key word is quality.

I don't see why not. If Battle.net's publishing system is bad, this will still be extremely useful. And now, the Beta is being taken down on the 31st, so people will still need to upload their maps here to distribute them. Also, it's good for single player maps even when the Publishing system is live.

I think of mapster as a map-making resource more than a map distribution resource anyway. I've saved a lot of time (and hopefully helped others) and frustration by checking others maps & reading forums/tutorials. Eventually mapster will be a good place for custom resources (models, sounds, trigger libraries, etc), and publishing isn't going to change that one bit :>

Yeah, Mapster was meant to be a developers resource. I had expected Battle.net's Map publishing feature to be up when GE was released, when we found out that wouldn't be the case, I chose to start advertising the Map distribution space here... Though, like I said before, the distribution system here will be all we have during the Beta downtime.
Since there will be a popularity sort, this will also be a key place not necessarily for quality maps, but NEW quality maps that havent topped charts... yet.
Mapster is still as said a valid source for help, tutorials and some other stuff (news specialized for map community)
Additional to this - you can easily handle your teams, find new teams or get feedback from other developers more easily than in/on Bnet.
The current restrictions (5map/mod restrictions & continental ones) on battle.net - might make it happen that good and innovative projects keep on US and EU+Asia can't get their hands on it, vice versa.
So it might not be necessary to actually upload stuff, than rather just presenting projects better, more detailed than battle.net actually does. ( that's just an idea )
Now that the map publishing is more or less here, will there be any point in uploading maps to sites like this?
I think so.

Agreed!
