I couldn't decide what section to put this in. Some of it is triggers and some of it might end up not being triggers, so I just chose one.
Q1
I had a revealer trigger for a region and it worked well. I then merged about 50 new regions into that original one and it still only reveals the old area. I don't understand what is going on. When I changed the region that was revealed to one that isn't supposed to be I could still see the old region along with the new one. Is that because I have the revealer for my allies as well?
I'm trying to use merge regions to reveal parts of the map in order to get a certain lighting like effect. This involves merging more than 75 or so (haven't actually counted) regions into for the obvious purpose of avoiding 75x12 triggers.
I started this map in beta and it seemed to work fine. I stopped working on it for a while and have recently tried to start the project up again. First thing I noticed when I opened the map is that the majority of the regions are missing from the merged region. I avoided the problem for a week, but I'm now trying to fix it. I started making regions and merging them into the existing region. When I tested the region the added regions weren't revealed.
I saved the game and exited. When I opened the map, the added regions were gone. I though maybe there was a bug connected to the region. I decided to start over and create the region from scratch. I made about a quarter or the regions, merged them together and tested the map. It worked and I thought "awesome, now I just have to make the remaining regions and merge them." When I did and tested the map the additional region were't revealed.
I then thought that perhaps I just had to merge all the regions at the same time. This might mean I would have to create additional triggers per player if I wanted to add new revealed regions but that would only mean 1-2 extra triggers per player, tops. I created all the regions and merged them together. When I tested the map only about a tenth of the regions were revealed. After I saved, closed the editor, and opened the map only the regions that were revealed remained.
Is there some cap to the regions we can merge together and if so why allow us to merge that many in the editor?
Is this a bug?
Is there something wrong with the map file?
Is this related to the fact that I started it in beta?
At which point should I see a doctor?
Q2
I wanted the map really dark. I figured a way to do this is to make the dark areas unexplored. When a unit moves through a dark area there is a trigger to hide the area around the unit so it becomes unexplored again. I'm afraid this might lead to lag later on and I'm looking for a more simple way to do this. Is there some way to set a unit up so that it doesn't "explore", if you know what I mean?
Update: Update: Update: Update:
is there a way I can change the color or shade of the screen and minimap "explored fog of war" so it looks identical to the "unexplored fog of war?" Because that would get rid of the entire second question.
Well I opened the map today and all the added regions were gone. It's not like I forgot to save because things are still in the map that were added after I merged the regions. That might have been part of the problem. I'm going to try to make the regions again and see what happens.
edit: I decided that I would just create the region over again. I did a small portion of the map and tested it and it worked. I then started making new regions and when I had about a quarter of the map done I used the side panel to shift click all the regions and merge. Guess what the new regions weren't added. Is this a bug?

I don't want the map to be black just very dark and the unit will have a small 2 radius vision by them selves. I just want the dark fog of war on the play screen to come back after the unit leaves the area. I was wondering if maybe I could change that lighter fog of war to be the same color as the unexplored fog of war, but I don't know where that is located.
I have no answer to the first question, but to the second, i would recommend doing a periodic event of 1.0 which sets all explored terrain unexplored. Try it and see if it lags.

For the first one, you must post up the code, people will not be able to know what's causing it.
For the second, there are several ways.
One is to simply enable black mask, the other is to set units vision to .5 or anything else really low, and the third is a lighting trick: http://forums.sc2mapster.com/resources/tutorials/12390-terrain-trix-2-replicating-warcraft-3-dnc-colouration/ (Although it would require attaching omnilights to units for anything to be visible at all).

I did a test with merge regions and it appears that there is a 50 region limit. Not that bad, I guess. I need 3-4 triggers per player, but whatever.
