I recently added a new variant to my map where the Host can change the Game Mode in the Lobby and then unlocks the ability to set Attributes on each Player. This works fine when testing the map after publishing it as Private. However, when I publish the map as Public, the Host does not have the ability to use the Game Mode dropdown menu in the lobby. All 3 of the dropdowns that the Host can normally change are disabled (Category, Mode, Teams). What's the deal with that? How can I make the Public lobby work the same as the Private lobby?
Well, I am not sure, but I think it has something to do with displaying Maps in different Game Modes (like Easy, Normal, Hard and Brutal difficulty). That's why it is locked once you make it public. That's probably how Battle.net 2.0 works. It justy cannot change from one Game Mode to another Game Mode, because in that case you would change to another 'Map'.
I remember that the Left2Die Map from Blizzard had several Game Modes. After a short time, they got rid of these and merged all Game Modes into one so that the Game List only displays one Version of Left2Die.
Indeed, it just makes sense. If you change the game to public, it will show up in the popularity list with your selected variant. If someone joins this specific variant and you were able to change it afterwards... you see the problem?

Heh. "Hey look, we have this amazing system that lets you specify your own game modes. Here, let us show you."
And after some weeks: "Bah, our system sucks, lets get rid of the modes."
Okay so basically you have to publish two versions of your map to truly publish both variants? Or is it possible by some method to change the Mode via Lobby?
Change it while still in the private lobby or join the correct variant right away; there will be entries for each mode in the popularity list automatically. Either way, you won't need 2 maps.

It would make much more sense if the B.net displays a Map only once, but with a dropdown menu containing all Game Variants. They could also add the popularity of all Game Variants together and show it on the overview, but once you open the dropdown menu, you can see the popularity of all the Maps...
In my opinion, the current Game Variant System is really not well thought out. Looking at Left2Die, even Blizzard realized that
I don't understand. When I say "Public" and "Private" I'm referring to the setting in the Publish window in the editor. It determines whether your maps are accessible by anyone other than the publisher. I'm finding that I can change the lobby settings only when it's *published* in "Private" mode. When I search for my maps in the battle.net list, they come up and I click on one, and then even though I'm host, the dropdown menus are disabled. How can I start my maps in what you are calling "private lobby"?

I am referring to creating a game in battle.net. If you join a game, you choose the game mode by selecting the mode from the popularity list, it cannot be changed then, because the lobby is public automatically. However, if you choose create game instead of join game, your lobby is initially private, only accessible by your friends and people you invite. As long as you are in this private lobby, you should be able to change variants at will, but as soon as you click the open to public button at the top, the variants will be locked and the lobby will be shown in the popularity list, showing the variant.
I doubt, that the publishing option makes a difference; however privately published maps cannot be opened to public, so the variants will always be available.

Sorry if this is a newb q.
Can someone confirm that basically all options are locked in the lobby for Public games, no matter what? I can't seem to activate them at all.
