I'm working on a situation where one player is watching another player (like in 1v1 obs). My plan is to include the ability to zoom out to view more of the map (by increasing Height Offset or Distance of a player's camera). My concerns are (1) pressure this puts on graphics cards and (2) pressure this in turn puts on bandwidth in multiplayer situations. What's the conventional wisdom on how far cameras should be set to zoom out?
depends on how much activity is going on. i might be wrong but i don't think there is a way to check if a computer is lagging. give multiple zoom options, and a vote option to disable options for observers. most computers cant do the entire map without lowering graphics. even the nice computers with nice internet, like mine. i would suggest since u asked 2x-4x zoom. even without zoom you are bound to have a laggy game cause of some person who, perhaps, shouldn't be playing star craft. they are all over the place.
shorter version:
1) dont think so
2) dont think so
3) 2x-3x

I don't understand what u want...
Bandwidth? graphic card?
@avogatro: Go
both but mostly bandwidth
