Another relatively small theme this week - next week something more interesting and large. This week's theme is going to be "Nostalgia". What does this mean? Simple: as per a suggestion by Scrinking, I'd like you all to recreate the first terrain you have ever made. If you don't remember what that was, just pick a terrain as far back as you can remember. This can include stuff you made in, for example, the WarCraft 3 editor, as long as your recreation is in the Galaxy Editor. Since your first terrain probably looked terrible (mine did, anyway), try and see if you can make a good-looking version now of what you were trying to do back then.
Oh god... you mean back in WC3 editor times? Man, last time I booted that editor up and looked at the terrains I made back in the early - mid 2000's, I nearly belched. Well, if I can I'll certainly contribute to this WTE.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I do terrain stuff.
...
And in a Starcraft haiku,
...
That's all I can do!
The only thing I remember when I first opened the editor in the beta phase, I made it crash with a minimap ping that had no wait so it was constantly trying to ping, so fast that it froze. There was no terrain involved though as I just wanted to see the triggers and be able to do "something".
Then, if I don't remember any early terrain I made, and that I made no map at all in the W3 editor...I guess I could go with the SC1's editor... but, my first terrain was about 2004-5, maybe? God, that's a long time ago. I still have some freaking old map. (Just checked) The oldest map I have is from 2007. At this time, I was able to do something "fine" with the editor. Of course it was shit, but still... I had 14 years old? OMG. In 2008 I made a melee map that I named the Protoss homeworld which was really really awesome. I don't know if it was balanced at all, but the computers on this map were 10 times harder. Since then until about 2010 (when SC2 came out) I kept making maps, use map settings mostly. Defence map of all kinds. But even then, there was a time lapse where I couldn't play SC2 cause I had trouble with my comp so I used another comp with SC1. I played a bunch of games, watched many 1v1 obs (goshh there are still some freaking good players) and I kept making maps of course. I finally discovered the lastest pieces that I didn't know about such as modifying the Storm damage, upg for building armor and static defence and worker upg, and changing the game animation speed to x2 or x4. (Btw, a Vulture with Iron Truster (upg to go faster) on x4 speed... is SOO FAST omg, or the Zergling, it's freaking hilarous to see). Basicly I would say that I know the SC1 editor at 99%. The 1% is the little things that you always can discover that do not matters at all.
Anyway, all this to say that I don't remember my early terrains. All I know is that I had so much fun with SC1's editor...that I keep using it "often". I used it one time when I had not access to SC2 for a WTE. The result was nice considering it was SC1 haha! Well, I'll see what I can do for this week.
My "first map" would be some random generic long-forgotten plaything spawned from WC2.
The oldest map that I have any specific working memory of was in SC1. Probably around '99 or 2000. (I later started working on rebuilding it in WC3, but didn't get far.) I don't know if I still have the map anywhere, might have to go dredging the depths of the internet to see if some old map archive still has a copy to refresh my memory.
Yeah, my oldest memory that I could remember was a fortress I made in the brood war editor, I remember always loving making generic fortresses, though I remember this one because I actually made a game out of it and didn't just make a generic terrain for the fun of it. I am sure it was made around 2006 - 2007, it was a square fortress that had two entrances. Quite the bland fortress at that, wonder if I will be able to spice the idea up a bit.
I'm glad that I haven't destroyed too many things in my campaign. Mission1 cliffs are almost same as it was on september 2010. I started that map as Mar Sara, then I changed it to Tarsonis and then back to Mar Sara. It took really long time before I learned texturing at all. Actually my maps were 1 texture only for really long time so I tried to do some texturing at september 2010 but it felt too difficult so I gave up :) Terrbile lighting on that old picture - I didn't understand how base height system and fog work back then. Actually I started that map as 4 player melee map (look at minimap of old picture) and then decided to try a campaign and today almost 3 years later I'm still improving my campaign and got feeling that I have learned only basics of editor.
And here you go. I began to loose inspiration near the end after finishing the walls and was not sure how to fill the fortress out further so I called myself finished. It is a large fortress so I will post the map if you want to take a closer look or want to try and fill it out yourself.
IMO my warcraft III terrains are lost and have no room for improvement anyway (based off memory). I will try to remake my "char" thingymagig that I did for my first WTE ever.
I am sure it is deceptively simple. I personally like the mood that the contrast creates. The slight reflection of the water for the "leak" of the water is a cool effect as well. Just out of curiosity any particular reason you chose to use a bird's eye view instead of the first person view in the first picture?
Weekly Terraining Exercise #129
Hey folks!

Good luck, and have fun!

Awesome idea ! I will try to do something I did back in world editor but it may not look perfect ^^

We should all do a dedicate terraining for SC1 :D

Anything allowed from non-Blizz games (*cough C&C Generals cough*)?
I think I still have the first map I made for it somewhere.

Nice topic but I have only ever had time to make two terrains and in hindsight the first is bin fodder at best.

I am not complete mine yet, but I created something I thought was badass :D so I guess you can take this as a sneak peek of the fortress.

Birds eye view looked better.

I would have to agree :)
