Since a broken PC and ridiculous amount of work have caused me to slack a bit at uploading the WTE's, I figured I'd upload one a day early. Since Legacy of the Void was recently released, I thought it might be nice if we have some tileset try-outs of the more iconic tilesets to see what the new gear is we'll be working with in the future. In that spirit, the first week's theme is "AiurCity", meaning the job is to make any terrain in that specific tileset. For next week and the week after, we'll try out a couple more, just to see how things play out.
You can find an album with all tilesets here, courtesy of greythepirate who put it up in the general forums.
A big lie. In our current currency, it's almost the DOUBLE of standard American Dollars. If there, it's 50, here's at least a hundred, even a bit more, considering our economic state, nowadays... And Blizzard *does* convert the currency, depending on location. Else, it'd be 50 here, too.
Also, texture set is used for multiple tileset painting, the best example being the first Aiur comeback mission in the campaign. While the first segment (Vorazun/Alarak) is set in a destroyed city, the second (Karax/Fenix) is set in a stone temple setting and the last one (Artanis) is set on caverns. It's good for micro missions where you can set more than one different environment without needing to be insanely creative, like in the past, just needing to adjust fog/lightning with triggers. The only bad thing is that 'defining' separate areas are divided in 8x8 blocks.
Also... BLIZZARD WHAT DID U DO WITH MY TERRAIN BRUSHES! I can't spam the fractal brush anymore to get a mess of dust buhuhuhu ;_;
Edit: Blizzard has removed the ability to blend textures. Now it's binary, if it's less than x it's invisible and if it's more than x it is. And x changes depending on the texture you're painting on and where on that texture it is. See attachment.
Anyway the Aiur tileset was unusable because of issue above, so I decided to use Shakuras instead. All the textures have the same problem (tried WoL map though, textures blended perfectly), but the effect was less problematic on shakuras. I believe we may have encountered this same thing with Mar Sara back in HotS, but whatever. The new doodads, especially the grass, are cool. When I get more time I will make better maps with lots of grass, vines and stone.
Hell, maybe I'll go back to that overgrown lab I made a year or two ago and grass it up.
I am currently working on updating my All Doodad project and the website once i finished making the picture. I must say, that there are many freaking OP-Mega-Awesome doodads about Aiur and the protoss structures. Nothing can stand against LotV new protoss stuff not even WoL and HotS combined. it's just so GOOOOD. Remember the video with Artanis and Kuldare, well, there is a view of Aiur and this could be possible to recreate. There are so many new protoss structure... I was mind blown when going through these... Losing so much time just because i was starring at them and look like a Zombie looking at a piece of meat. I just can't wait to finish the All Doodads and then play with all the new assests, this is INCREDIBLE. I'm just so freaking thrilled you have no idea.
I wished i'd give it a try for Aiur, but... I kind of spent 7 hours in the editor already working on the All Doodads... I'm at 301 pictures made... and the scroll bar tells me I'm like 1/3 of the list. So meh. MORE EPIC STUFF AHEAD :D Aw yeah!!!
I really like where that is going. The depth play is amazing and the detail on the bridge... holy shit. This is the kind of stuff you could see in a third person style level.
It seems ScrinKing had a point concerning the tileset - These textures are unblendable, either due to the dds themselves or the programming for the particular tileset.
It'll try and see what I can do to make at least the 'jungle' settings more appealing, but it's not promising at the moment...
I think I managed to find a workaround for this tileset's blending problems, and I believe Blizzard must've done the same, too, when making the first mission map for this tileset.
Change one of the textures. (The dark one, preferentially, for Aiur Temple grass)
If you're trying to use the Noise brush, like I did, do it in small, controlled clicks, one at a time. Adjust size so the 'edges' are more fluid and a bit akin to old BW terraining.
Use custom cliffs (Aiur Rock Cliff Jungle and Aiur Cliff Rocks, in my case) to both disguise and make a variation.
Trees can now be placed in clusters, making the job much more easier. The pine looking ones are called 'Regulars'. Use sparingly.
Use as MUCH vegetation as you can. It can be both 'Aiur Overgrowth' or 'Aiur Ground Cover'.
Vines are a bit complicated to place and make them look good, as you must resize, change height, etc.
Don't forget the foliage meter on the Terrain brush.
There is alot more work on this than what we actually see at first... All the very low ground is made of brick doodads and the statue on pillars on the left is so well made, a combinaison of doodads.
Looks good! I saw the green circle within the first 2 sec of looking at it, but thats fine... xD I very like the pile of rocks and the rocky cliffs going into the water. I feel like there could have been a bit more temple references than in the far back. Like, maybe textures, bricks, broken pillars or minor stuff lost under the vegetation. But overall that really cool.
Not just this, but the cliffs are also hidden - That's the LotV feature that allowed them to make both the bridge on the first Aiur Comeback mission, the destroyed zerg-ridden sections, as well as the 'platform pillars' close to the first Ma'lash guardian in the first Alarak mission. Though I'll admit, it takes a lot of work to make it look good and cohesive, to mask all the 'black squares'.
/edit, I'm working on a mini-temple of sorts, more like a shrine, that's close to the city entrance. But you'll see it only when it's done. :)
Weekly Terraining Exercise #223
Hello again people!
Since a broken PC and ridiculous amount of work have caused me to slack a bit at uploading the WTE's, I figured I'd upload one a day early. As always, good luck & have fun!

Well, I was wondering when that'd come up... I'll have eventually one by next weekend, heavily inspired on 'Reclamation', no doubt.
I heard Blizzard games are super duper cheap in Brazil because Blizzard doesn't really convert between currencies. Is this true?
Edit: Can someone explain what on earth "Texture set" is and what it's used for/how?

Okay... So how do I add multiple "texture sets"?

Working on projects:
This must be the only time I ever publish some WIP of any WTE of mine, but here we go. Suffice to say, progress, to a minimum, was done today.

I really like where that is going. The depth play is amazing and the detail on the bridge... holy shit. This is the kind of stuff you could see in a third person style level.

Hardly a bridge, more like the most ostentatious entryway into a Protoss city ever. Intentional, of course.

I hope you guys dont mind if I post my aiur terrain that I made some time ago?
@DeltaCadimus: Go
Also that looks so nice! i like that temple thing in the background
EDIT: I will also try to make a terrain with the actual tileset that is stated in the "rules" :p that will come later though
Alright here it is
Still a work in progress, lots of incomplete areas, but it's coming along nicely enough to share what I have so far.

oooo this gave me a lot of ideas
Well, I guess this will be the first WTE which I post WIPs continuously. Well, here's tending some wishes by Scbroodsc2...
