Even later update than last week, I'm a day off >.>. Should have the WTE on monday again next week though!
Weekly Terraining Exercise #45
Last week didn't get a lot of people participating, so I guess I'll try something more accessible again this time. This week's theme will be Haunted Forest, an idea brought up by Telthalion in the WTE Global Information/Ideas thread. While I'm on about that - if you're hesitant to join WTE's, feel free to make your own suggestion there!
Anyway - Haunted Forest pretty much speaks for itself. I want to see forests, and they need to be creepy. We don't have a lot of medieval models easily at our disposal, so you'll have to work with environmental tools (webbing and fog).
This is interesting, I think I would have add a few persons. Also, I wonder what happend to the trees in that weird cicle. You know... there are massive trees all around but that spot.
Technique tip: I would have use the fog instead of the cloud doodates. Or use both. Since the fog doesn't make the "random cloud effect" but just a flat effect like we can see in my pictures.
Maybe make the trees more tall? In my map, the trees are really weird without the lighting effect caus the are deformed. They are x=150 y=150 z=350. For most of them. But it does still look realistic. When you look at your camp, you see the bench and suppose someone on it and look at the tree next to it... almost the same size.
You can search on the net and try finding idea based on you fire camp. For example: http://www.tamarackcabins.com/images/Fire.jpg Founded on Google after 1min search. Look how similar it is from what you did, but look also to what is around, house, fence, maybe stacked logs... etc
I think that his picture is fine as is and your ideas would take away from the theme being portrayed within it.
Your "technique tips" are more artistic preference, rather than terraining skill.
@ Sheo
I think the first pic is my favorite, I would recommend some sort of lingering fog creeping into the circle, with perhaps one huddled civilian by the fire (using his cower animation), and a few shadowed creatures in the woods surrounding it, like silhouettes of a hydra and/or zerglings (units with pure black tinting, or 0 diffuse multiplier) or even just as is, depending how the lighting looks on them
Most units in starcraft are just to hightech for my liking and i wanted to allow people to themself imagine what the story about this campfire was; when it's taking place, where they are, who they are and why they are gone.
You know there are these things called glades and you can see a few trees where chopped down.
Yes i could have added more things around but i wanted a temporary, one night, camp not a house in the middle of a haunted forest.
I call it "What the hell happened here?!?" It's just a taste of the work to come. I probablky won';t do more now because I need to get my butt in gear for my main project.
at a point in time i had been making a horror map, i guess ill throw in some pics from it.
lol i forgot to re-enable the fog, oh well wont be as creepy i guess. I had attached the map in case anyone wanted to take a look at it, its obviously not complete but you can play it and run around as the little civilian but i had not implemented the light for him in the triggers so it would be difficult to see
Seriously, you put a whole bunch of trees and you just place the camera from a nice angle. Last thing, set the light and fog. This count for like 75-90% of this WTE. But, there might be some other way to do hunted forest without using lighting and fog effects. ;)

Good luck everyone!

I missed a few WTE, I migh at less try this one =)
Edit: after about 30-40min works here what I got for this morning.
There is only trees on the map and one texture for the ground. The rest is only fog and lightning. I like the result.

I'll throw something together with this. I'm a bit bored of terraining because of my other large project but we shall see what I can do.
I do love these campfires =P. Didn't quite nail this one but it's a great concept imo.

Reminds me of Resident Evil 4's cover in Japan, or was it in EU? Anyways I had the chainsaw guy walking through a forest like that.

Pretty popular that kind of smoke xD I think it should be use only on the bottom of the trees or over a lake..

Yeah like I said I was busy working on this massive project too.
This should give you an idea of my real skills ;)

We can't see the details from that view :P
It just looks like a bunch of Rubble Buildings with some occasional lights.
Also, here's something I threw together in about 5 minutes :D
