I have an idea, but I won't put it into effect unless people think it's useful.
I'm thinking of creating a sort of "template map" with custom models of every non-hero non-cinematic non-destructible unit or structure into a doodad. Some destructibles (Such as rocks) will be in, though.
It's very useful and has actually been done before. I think I mentioned it too. Back in WarCraft 3 we had the "Ultimate terraining map". Back then you had to do some specific tricks to get water to actually look like a river (otherwise you could only seperate water from ground with cliff levels), and this map had basically taken care of the entire map in such a way that lowering ground in an area would provide you with a river. It also had a bunch of imported interesting models (some custom trees and all) and some more stuff.
The need for a map like that is somewhat gone, but I'd use an ultimate terraining map - still plenty of stuff that could be done to make a terrainer's life easier.
I knew how to make water look like a river - 1, cover map with shallow water, 2, raise ground everywhere, 3, lower ground for rivers. I also knew how to do waterfalls, which was applying shallow water next to raised shallow water, which would create a hole. And I did it anyway before I got feedback, and posted it
