Continuing on the spree of going through ideas from the WTE Global information/ideas thread, this week our theme is going to be "A Spectacle". As per an idea by Tatatatate, the idea is that you terrain something that is truly a spectacle. This means we're talking some kind of natural phenomenon, or maybe even an invasion - but either way something that has gathered a lot of onlookers standing awestruck as they witness whatever you've created. A bit of a vague theme, perhaps, but we'll see where the ball ends up rolling towards.
When I saw "Spectacle" I just though about some kind of theater with a scene. Then I though, what if Protoss were acting on a scene? So here is what i came up with. And somehow, I was able to inster some funny stuff like the Colossus "hiding" behind the banners or the probe looking at the scene.
I made 2 versions, one with temple bricks, because i found the ground was boring, then i though, wait, this need an audience... so i moved the bricks and placed units. I think i prefer with the units.
This was pulled together quite fast compared to how much time i can spend on terrains. It took about an hour.
Well, i kind of tried to make the Light templars on one side and the Dark templar on the other side and try to give the impression that they are acting the reunion of the Protoss... ( A bit of lotv inspiration here...) And the mamacore to be like floating camera... idk xD
Here is my take for this week now please dont say it dosent make sense I just find the W3 extramily low quality and Blizz should have done a better job with the models. I did this one with Renee's mod. I wanted to add more rocks as usual but the models are soooooo ugly it gives me a sore eye.
Haha no worries about Wc3 models. They just kind of imported the models from wc3 without actually making them better. They did for some heros i believe, but not everything.
But i want to bring my point not on the models or the rocks at all, but more on the water. It feels empty to me. There is only reflection and small barely visible shorewaves. I think i would try to remove some reflection, add some transparency so you can place stuff in the water and see them through, like rocks, trees, plants, maybe debris. I would maybe try to make "scree slopes" (not sure of that word) but basicly rocks at the bottom of the cliffs going through the water... Maybe floating dead trees or branches, maybe some green floating mucus (like the Zerus water plants). And i would try to see if adding white fog far in the air could actually be reflected on the water as clouds. That would add some more details to the water. Maybe just a very little texture too instead of just flat. There is always a little wind doing some small waves. After all.... there is a huge waterfall on the left right? XD
Hahaha. Truth be told. I think they kind of care about the Arcade, but the thing is, even though there are very good maps if you search a bit, how can you be really worried of something that does not yet exist like awesome new map to come with epic gameplay and revolutionnary concept and engine? Like, at least try to do and share an editor with most people hoping that maybe, once in a while a map will stand out and be like, "whoa that is epic"
They gave us pretty much all their tools to make awesome maps, its up to us to make something, but of course, the question of all time; "is it worth the investment?" It's not easy.
Idk what are the very long term plans for Blizzard other than what, overwatch, millions of addons to World of warcraft, maybe one or two expansion for D3 and if sc2 is out of the work in progress other than for balance, map rotation and other small things, idk. They will most likely give more time into heartstone as their first multiplatform card game... I guess once again it all comes to us, what do we want about sc2. Personnally, I want the arcade to shine at the very least and i want to see epic games 1v1, archon, team whatever, i dont believe sc2 is going to die like alot of people (or seems like alot) say. In 5-10 years, I'll still be playing sc2 from time to time for sure. I never stopped sc1, nor will i with sc2.
So eh... well, all that to say Blizzard cares at least a little... It's not because your are a company that it means you are the best, the tools they share with the world is probably scary for them, imagine if their content was more bad than fanmade campaign and stuff...
I think I went off road on that one, but thats one of my thought when i hear "Blizzard really don't care".
You can have a whole discussion about what Blizzard did right and wrong with the arcade. In the case of the WarCraft III assets, though: literally all they did is make some old stuff easily available for a new engine. Complaining that the stuff 'looks bad' is retarded - no shit, it's old stuff. It'd be the same as me handing you my old 1970's Volkswagen for free and you going "yeah but it has a noisy engine, clearly you don't give a shit about me". I don't even

Heres a somewhat wip map. I dont know if I want to add more doodads. But the idea was that it was supposed to be a huge zerg invasion of a protoss temple.
Don't know if I can be arsed about adding units.
Wow, that looks great! Push that to a whole melee map and it would be awesome! I like how there are some huge trees. It gives a scale feeling... and the tilted pillars and broken ones, little details that add alot of story telling. I very like the purple crystal. How did you get it to look that perfect purple? I though it was blue by default. Fog and shadow adds alot of details. The lighting is decent, not dark, not too bright, just fine to show off the terrain, without making the focus on that (think of lava rising terrain with all red lighting)... you got grass, rocks, plants, fog, the cliffs merging between natural and manmade...
It's not the most impressive terrain I saw, but it a very solid decent terrain with all the little details. Worth at least 8 or 9 on 10. :P
hah thanks! There are different textures for the temple doodads. This one is a slight red-ish color and with purple energy crystal things. While the others are more green-yellow with blue energy things.
I've always wanted to do some campaign maps but I dont know any technical stuff so yeah- But thanks a bunch for the kind words :p

Weekly Terraining Exercise #218
Hey hey folks!

As always, good luck & have fun!

Just an FYI, got a typo in thread title. "Spectable". Threw me off for a second lol.
I'm sorry I've been absent on these for a while. Honestly, I'm just hooked on Metal Gear Solid 5. I'll be back once I finish the game.

Something like this: http://www.natures-desktop.com/images/wallpapers/1680x1050/lakes/derwent-water-calm.jpg
Of course its way to realistic for a sc2 terrain, but it gives ideas. What do you think? :)
Working on projects:
warcraft 4 will brings you better models than blizz made. Blizz really dont care about it as you can see.
