I want to know what kind of terrain people like the most. Do you prefer woods or city? grass or concrete type stuff? would you rather play a map with lots of space or a lot of doodads everywhere? Please tell me your opinion!
I tend to like "natural extremes" type terrains. Deserts, icy wastelands, jungles. That kind of thing.
For open space vs clutter - it really depends on the specific map/terrain. Sometimes lots of doodads crammed into every corner are good, sometimes leaving areas wide open helps to set the mood better.
I don't think there's one terrain everybody likes. I like the Mar Sara tileset a lot, but overall I just tend to like terrains that feel good and have a lot of thinking and work behind them. Quality says a lot more than setting - I've really liked terrains on virtually all tilesets there are.
I suppose I try to be an impressionist as far as terraining goes. I like to suggest a story, or better yet, a backstory, but I do not like to say what that backstory is. Typically I prefer to use a few ruins, and try to suggest that something happened, but allow players room to interpret what happened.
Terrains... I like appropriately detailed terrains that really fit and contribute to the setting. A map needs to have just enough doodads that fit the settings.
Whether crammed with doodads or open areas... Depends entirely on the map and map type and what it's supposed to be. I only have some doodads in my map to make the cliffs look better (Xel'naga worldship walls) and a lot of fog, and as far as I've heard people like it. If you're doing an RPG, you want many doodads and details, if you're doing a melee map, you want little doodads on the main parts of the map, leave space for buildings etc. People are gonna get annoyed if there's a doodad blocking a location for building a structure or just blocking unit pathing.
For my favourite tileset... I like mar sara overall, but my absolute favourite terrain texture is Shakuras Bricks and I like most of the other shakuras textures as well. I'd love to see an icy map though! Got none of those afaik.
My preference is forests and plains.. but anyone making terrain that makes proper use of doodads can make a terrain I like. Sometimes I feel people use too many doodads in a setting, while in others that loads of doodads actually adds well to the picture. Space areas can be nice, but I am someone that came from wc3 and just has more interest in forest-like terrain.
well if a city is done well it is amazing but if it is done poorly it's worthless. Personally I like mountains using the ice tileset, deserts with an old western feel, and quality cities.
My personal favorites are Ulnaar and Castanar (or just space ones in general). They allow for a very specific theme that is shown through blizzard's maps.
