Hi everyone :) i am a new mapper and got the idea to make a space platform with lava streams as hot metal ready for processing or anything. the entire lava stream thing went well, but the spaces i left for expansions were too small and too large (one (the highyield) could barely hold a command center and another could support a full-fledged second base) and balancing (mirroring) the map seemed to take quite a while. now my questions are these:
What is the quickest and easiest way to mirror a map, not necessarily over the exact middle of the map, but maybe over a diagonal as well?
What is the advised space for an expansion with a commandcenter maybe 3/4 buildings and some defence?
any help would be appreciated so i can keep these things in mind the next time i start a map so i won't have to redesign it because some parts are too small or anything.
To mirror a map, you can drag and copy terrain, just as you can copy any other element. I'm not entirely sure on how to rotate copied terrain, though.
As for base space; this varies depending on the map and really is something you have to figure out for yourselves. Some melee maps even incorporate limited space to make them more interesting. You can press Shift+H to turn on the pathing grid and get a better idea of the size of your cliff. Alternatively, you can press U, find the buildings you want to fit in there, and place 'm down. Do note that in normal melee maps command centres have to be at a minimum distance from minerals and gas - this is indicated by yellow tiles when the pathing grid is turned on.
thanks! i didn't know that about the yellow grid, that helps me alot already. and yeah, i would need to rotate copied terrain to make it work :3 i'll see what i can do and otherwise nag blizzard about it as it's their editor xD
thanks alot I'll be uploading some maps here shortly (normal melee maps, not really into coding and editing stuff, not yet at least)
go under change height and push escape so you are not making any hills. click and drag as if you were to select multiple units at once. when you have dragged the terrain you need copied, release the mouse and hit ctrl+c. You can then ctrl+v to paste it.
then go to edit -> rotate or use the following bindings:
numpad / = 90* counterclockwise.
numpad * = 90* clockwise.
numpad . = 180 turn.
When you have copied the terrain just do the same with your doodads and units. (make sure you know atleast one doodad/unit you know where is suppose to be, so you can see excatly where to place them accordingly with the terrain.
yet again thanks :) i suppose making a map diagonally mirrored would be work-intensive, or can you select terrain diagonally as well, just as you can paint disgonal cliffs and such?
You can't select terrain diagonally as far as i know, But, you can select the bulk of it, then hold shift i believe and select more. youll have to look at your minimap to see what all is selected. In turn you could kinda select diagonal. Just would take a lil extra time shift-selecting everything. Esp if you want to get in tiny areas...
well that's probably all i need to know ^_^ thanks everyone, i lurked the google results but found nothing informative so i'm glad there's a helpful community such as this one to help me out :)
