Trying to make somekind of terrain. What you think? Is there something specific I could/should do to improve it?
edit* v2 some red rocks replaced by those grey rocks. Overal a bit better for the eye (too much red is kinda anoying). Its not perfect, but Its somewhat decent? :/
I agree that 2nd picture is better. Personally, I'm not a fan of "Infested Char" theme, so I probably won't be positive =P
When you launch map, doesn't that place feel like it's too much for an eye? You got 4 or 5 different textures blending with each other near the hatchery, there is so much different stuff that nothing captures attention, It feels like a proper way would be to make each place show something, to display some scenerey, but this right now feels like a storage of doodads and textures. A little bit of everything make it nothing special. Would be cool to see more structured composition. But.. as I said, I probably don't like infested Char, so I might be wrong.
I think you could have more simple things (such as trees and rocks). Gonna go see now how blizzard handled Char.
Edit:
It also depends on if you're gonna constantly stare at this place or if you're gonna see it once in a while, so if I'ts a place that player's gonna see only a few short times, it's perfectly fine for it to be a mess. Little chaotic scenery is a good change of visuals from standard battlefield. So yeah, it would also be good to know what purpose that piece of terrain serves.
1 - Blizzard had a lot more open-ness (?) to their char maps. They also didn't blend a bunch of textures like that. That texture looks like an overlord fleet just barfed all over it. They blend about 2-3 textures at once and have a similar pattern repeating with slight variations. Not just blah.
2 - The doodads is a little much. The way blizz did it was they kept their dark rocks closers to cliffs that were far from lava and had the red crystals on cliffs close to lava.
3 - Check out screenshots from first char mission
I'm not saying your map is terrible or to copy blizzard, but some of the things I pointed out as well as Ducky, make a lot of sense. I just threw up the screenshots as examples of what I was trying to get at. Plus, ducky wanted to look over how blizz did it anyways.

This is indeed the Gorgeous "Zergs live in char" map you got there, zenx1!
Anyways, yes, make sure your fps (Frame Rate) is low so it doesn't become laggy as hell and add moar detail.
G' Luck on your map, zenx1!

Now I have a bit better picture of what to improve.
