And hello again fine folks! Time for WTE #25, a (small) milestone in the history of WTEs, I assume. This time around, something experimentative!
Weekly Terraining Exercise #25
This WTE is going to be about "Alien Worlds". What I'm referring to with this, is that I want to see any sort of terrain that uses a tileset we don't see too often. Similar to the 'bridging the gap' WTE, I want to see how people make good terrains out of some weird, underused worlds. You can make whatever you want, as long as you make it in the style of one of the following six tilesets;
Meinhoff
Monlyth
Shakuras
Valhalla
Xil
Zhakul'das
For simple ideas to start off with - try a military compound surrounded by mountains, or a forest.
Here we go, let's start the results! Say thanx to my computer for lagging while recording, and say thanx to Windows Movie Maker that screw up all the quality of my videos, BUT say thanx to those both to give us something pretty nice. This could have be used as well for the WTE #24 that was the indoors.
I like that a lot, Brood. During the first 20 seconds I felt like the main reason it looked good was because you were filming in first person, and thought it'd look really chaotic from top-down view, but then the camera started circle-zooming out and it all worked out. Overall you didn't really do what I had in mind (I mainly want to see how people create 'natural areas' for these tilesets; it's fairly easy to create 'a base' in any tileset), but it's nevertheless interesting. I mainly like your use of camera though, and might even like that more than the terrain - you're showing your work off in an awesome fashion.
That's... a bit empty at some points, but it's a great start, I'd reckon. You've got some good ideas there, they could just be improved upon a little bit, I reckon. For example, you could enlarge those watch towers to fill up the entire plateau. You could place those machines making airplane parts a little more symmetrical to the building. You could also add some stuff to the mining area on your first picture. All in all, it's got a good base, though.
Basicly, I wanted to do a terrain, but... It turned like that. The result is not that bad, me too I like the firsts seconds, where the base looks gigantic, very big. That's also what I wanted to do. I've modified some of the units size, some I put bigger, like the Mothership, the Colossus, the Carriers, some I put smaller, like the Immortals. the Zealot, the Hight Templar. Notice that there is 2 kind of size of Hight Templar, one small, one big like a Statue.
I didn't know how to start my map. I placed all the textures in a spot and look at them. It gaves me an idea. Make my own "tileset". So if you look in the middle, where looks the camera almost all the time, the textures on the floor is made of 2 textures. Big hexagons and small hexagons. From that, I placed building around, and then walls, etc. So, the floor gived me all the idea of this base.
By now, I'll try to do what was supposed to be the Alien worlds as "natural areas". I though "Alien worlds" could be a "Alien kind of base". As I said at the end of the WTE #24, I want to do around 3 times this exercise, and probably all the others. To try to make something different all the time and spread the ideas, find some more, use the doodate a way that we would not think...
Actually i had those towers big at one point but i´d just thought it would be to scaled. But i agree with you thats it to empty, need to add some more random doodads . For the mining place i would like to have some miners but i opened the map in melee so... (And thus the edging around the trenches) And for the airplane parts i really dont get what you mean.
Check your own screenshot. They are positioned 'well', but are a bit off. You could shove them back all the way against the building they're in front of. You'll probably have to turn them a little bit too to make it work.
My second map is completed, but I'm too lazy at the moment to do the video, and no, I don't want to post pictures. >.< So I'll do it "later" XD It's pretty less interesting and is way shorter than my WTE#25 -1. Anyway, there is some good things. I always play with the size, effects, and sometimes, I color the doodates, as I did for this one. You will see, once my "lazy moment" will pass xDD
I finally finished mine. I tried to a video of it, but the annoying camera tool didn't work as I wanted.
Maybe I will do another later...
Also, on the front page, the current events still say WTE #23.
That's quite interesting Ex. Looks like you solved the problem of only having weird doodads by using mountains. Mountains which seem to work fairly well in that tileset, too.
Also, I should've updated the current events thing ages ago. Will do it now.
God, man! Most of that I considered 'alright', as in it would be the way I filled up uninteresting areas, but that last view from the water with the plants sticking out is amazing. That's MMORPG quality right there. Niiiiice!
I don't like that one as much Ex. The island looks akward. The cliff area is fairly decent but it is a bit boring/ambiguous. It lacks focal points like the rock formation you've got in the top. It could do with more filling. Possibly more plants, possibly brambles. There's also some rocks in the mountains that float halfway above stuff; you should lower them a bit.

Ok, I may try monlyth.
Protoss are aliens? Yeah... So I'm doing Shakuras Protoss secret world !
Edit: actually, it looks more like a Xel'naga base...

Zhakul'das, my favorite! Going to do something with it.

If you want help about how I do with triggers and cameras to show my map in a video, just ask ^^

Here we go! It looks like today I'm no more lazy! Yay! XD (ok, going far far away)
Here is my map. It's pretty simple but still, this is more what it was ask to do.

Oooh, pretty! Reminds me of Zangarmarsh from WoW. Great job!
I've made another one, on Xil.

You are amazing with camera angles. Did you take some video class or something? Those seem really good.
