Generally, roads are what they are, roads. If you want to make them 'less ugly', the best you can do is take the focus of them. Put scenery next to them. Raised cliff, rocks, cacti, you name it.
Hi, for my urban areas, i prefer to use terrain rather than the roads, with a few decals, you can give a road feel.
Here's a section from a map im working on, using korhal dark concrete as my road texture.
another thing you can use is complimentary doodads. Terran tarmacs, ground objects, street lights, signs all contribute. Put a blockade and make people walk around for more depth.
I'm fairly certain there are only two types of road anyway, Mar Sara and Korhal. Mar Sara being the more beaten up of the two. And of course the Tarsonis train tracks... but look at Blizzard's urban maps from the campaign for ideas... they used a tonne of doodads and textures around the road to make it look nice.
You could also simply make your own roads like replaywarrior said using the terrain and doodads.
Sorry for bringing this in-active thread up again, but I just wanted to say that you can add road types to your current texture set by selecting it in the Data Editor and go to the "Hard Tiles". There you can add new roads (There's: "Korhal Road", "Meinhoff Road", "Mar Sara Road" & "Tarsonis Rail")
Do those different types of road actually looks different though, Fimbus?
Yeah they do. Mar Sara is the regular two-way road. Korhal is the four-laned road. The rail is self explanatory. I don't really recall the Meinhoff road.

The roads are a nice addition to the game, but they are whatever you make out of it. You have to make them look better yourself. Try placing them by a cliff-side, with foliage on the side.

you could always make new hard tiles and import them into your map as assets.
For now you have to use tiles or wait till someone makes some new ones
