This week Moz is a bit busy, so I took the commands to do a long time fantasm : doing a terrain which evokes an optical illusion! The rules are easy, you must do a terrain that fools the eye or something that is not real. It's up to you guys!
tatatasad =( Got lot of work these last days and my free time is spent in playing and mapmaking starparty, sc2 forums, etc. Even if I like the idea of optical illusion, (but its not an easy one :P )
HA! That's what I do all the time in the Cutscene editor. I'll only use one view to do a bunch of the editing and once I change the angle I realize it's all out of whack. I never remember to account for that 3rd dimension >.>
I like this idea, actually... Will use it next monday. For now I'll just leave this one up; I just came out of my exam week and literally finished up a 3000 word essay 15 minutes ago, simply haven't gotten around to setting up a new WTE properly.
Hahahaha! Yeah, always move your cam before its too late xD
If Pitch and Roll was added to the Dynamic Terrain Editor of StarParty, I would have made it there and it would have probably been much better. The galaxy editor doesn't allow simple hotkey such as pressing a key to make it roll, change scale, change position, etc. It all has to be done by opening the properties, change those, press ok, see if it's alright, if not open it again, and so on... In the DTE you just press a key see it get bigger smaller etc.
wait... did you disable those hotkeys or something? Because I use hotkeys to rotate stuff all the time, and used to know how to re-size, hotkeys exist for all of those things. (also if you ever want help terraining or want feedback id be very happy to help, just send me a PM :) )
shift + alt + left button drag mouse moves the pitch,
and ctrl + alt + left button drag mouse moves the roll.
You can find a lot of useful commands under "file" > "configure controls" > and this particular organized in "selection" If you have something you can do in the editor, there is probably a hotkey for it, and there are a whole lot of commands that do not have a hotkey as well, it is cool to see what else you can assign a hotkey (in grey).
Other useful ones I use are "page up" and "page down" moves doodads up and down, and the "," and "." buttons switch the variations of the doodads.
As for the other commands I do not know because I rarely use them, but they can all be found under preferences. Hope that saves you a few hours of work per month ;)
And for my submission, it started out as some attempt at optical illusion, then it sort of turned into a surreal afterlife piece lol, the last 2 pics are just other angles I was trying out with the terrain, and the last shows the entire terrain for far off.
I give you 11/10 for originality, it looks really nice. It's f*cking weird but I like it. I feel like more terrains should be made in this awkward vision where things are everywhere in all directions, where you don't know really where you are... Playing with reflection, up side down doodads, etc. It's so weird, that even by looking at the last picture, I still can't understand where is the camera at all in the first picture. I guess it's all to the left right over the water with reflection..
That's awesome and totally unique. You think you could add the map file too? The day I fix my hard drive issue I'll start gathering maps the most possible and then pictures. I just can't imagine how awesome this terrain would look if animated with a camera moving rolling... Well done GG.
shift + alt + left button drag mouse moves the pitch,
and ctrl + alt + left button drag mouse moves the roll.
I did not know about those... or wait, I did know once a long time ago, probably when hots came out, but I stopped using it because hotkeys were just too complicated and similar...
Alt + Right click, moves camera Up Down
Ctrl + Right click moves camera in free mode
If doodad selected:
Ctrl + Left click turns Left Right
Ctrl + Alt + Left Click changes Roll
Shift + Alt + Left Click changes Pitch
Also, I think I stopped using it at all because it's never working as you want. Everytime you Rotate, Roll or Pitch, the click drag is not precise and the doodads either does the action too much or not enough, or it gets stuck half way and you try to move the drag in all direction to make it come back, and so on... So, it's not efficient. A simple "press Key to make pitch/roll/rotate do +/-1" would have been easier. But this is something that requires triggers, so In-game... Oh and you must Click outside the doodads if you want to execute the action otherwise it will moves it... well for rotate.
Thanks! :) here ye go, and you are correct, the camera is at the bottom left of the last image for the first main image. A warning however, I had to put some lights in the water at the angle because apparently reflections do not reflect HDR multiplication, so if you move the camera you will see some things not line up. The stuff you learn while experimenting ;)
Weekly Terraining Exercise #181
Hey folks!
This week Moz is a bit busy, so I took the commands to do a long time fantasm : doing a terrain which evokes an optical illusion! The rules are easy, you must do a terrain that fools the eye or something that is not real. It's up to you guys!
Good luck and have fun!
The Global Information/Idea thread for Terraining Exercises can be found here: http://www.sc2mapster.com/forums/development/terrain/14658-terraining-exercises-global-information-idea-thread/
So, my silly little idea the other week has become a thing now? :D
@ScrinKing: Go
Yeah sure!
I must say that i'm a bit sad because of the no post of this week. I hope that people will find some time this week-end...

Working on projects:
I did a little shadow illusion, which is a classic on google.
Do the tests yourself and you will see that the squares up from A and B are identical!
They cannot be perfectly perfectly identical do to 3D light and terrain mesh little deformation, but it gives a nice example.

sorry that school, midterms, and general life responsibilities killed your wte this week ;)
Alright tried something in 5-10min and it looks "fine". It could be better for sure as the illusion is not quite working, but the idea is there :P

Anyways... simple and to the point I like it

Ah yeah I was thinking of the same thing at the beginning! Nice job man.

Wow. I would have not been able to imagine such weird terrain. This is a special terrain. I'm impressed :D
