I've noticed the promising beginning of a model editor within the SC2 GE. Using it I've been trying to make placement models for doodads. (Placement models are the transparent green models you see when placing a building) Anyway, so far I've been unsuccessful. Has anyone else tried this or knows of a simpler way to do it?
What I've done:
Okay I want to create a unit titled 'Makeshift Wall'.
First I create the Unit and fill out all the goodies.
Moving on, I pick up a button and an actor using the base model Taking the model of Assets\Doodads\SpacePlatformWallDebris\SpacePlatformWallDebris_02.m3.
I test the map, everything is great, except when I place my new structure, the placement model is normally colored (instead of the normal green transparency). While this is only a cosmetic problem, I still find it annoying.
I return to the actor menu and move on to the Model menu.
I create a Model titled 'Wall'
Disappointed I find that there are no color options for the model here, but there is a lighting menu.
I move into the lighting menu and try some of the preset options. I notice no change.
Unfortunately the lighting menu has NO TOOLTIPS on anything, making this into a fun 100+ option game of trial and error.
I create a light titled Green based off the misc option. Browsing through the menu I try some different things.
I find it annoying that every time you change a single color option it auto-tests the map.
So far I've gone through about 15 different lighting settings taking about 5 min a piece due to auto-launch where I could just view game settings and look at the effects in the editor. (Fun math fact, that's 1 & 1/4 hours spent on ONE of the several lighting menus)
In any case, I've been rather unsuccessful and blizzards SC2 forum might as well be dead. Hopefully some of you guys can help me out on this one ^^
I think what you need is an entire new model as I don't think Blizzard added the green 'wireframe' models for doodads. If you look in the unit editor all units have a placement model (if I remember correctly). I could be wrong though, maybe there is a setting that allows you to change the colour into green and the alpha into 50% and other options. Have a look at the placement models, maybe you can get something out of that.
