When I first got StarCraft 2 I was VERY excited about the prospect of making the map that I'd been planning my head for like 3 months. So first for a week or two I played normal games and custom games to see how things were, was happy. Finally started work on my new map (2 weeks in(ish))... now I find out through joining this forum and blizzard forums that well... making my map is pointless? :( Appearently, if I make my map, no matter if it is good (better than top of list popularity games), it will never get played? Wow. I don't understand what Blizzard was thinking - they boasted "so many chances for new map makers blah blah blah" And because of the pop system it really defeats the purpose of making a game?
I remember creating a game once that had low popularity and was pretty confused why after 10 minutes NO ONE had joined. So really, there's no way my map would get popular without a huge organised effort. I have like 4 friends that play Competitive games exclusively, so thats not going to happen, ever.
People say the joy should just be creating the map. That is part of the fun, but nothing makes me happier than playing my OWN map with 7 other random people and hearing their comments, seeing what they do, how they interact with the game, what they find... Not going to happen now ;(
So what's the point? This has actually really depressed me lol.
The thing with mapmaking nowadays is not only making the map, but making it look attractive with trailers, advertising on a lot of different communities e t c.
You can still do it if you got the will. Impossible is nothing.
Just make your map and don't worry about it. Blizzard are taking feedback on the official forums and are aware of the issue - personally I believe they will end up changing/improving the system.
Even if they don't, if your map is good enough and you get it out there, get it reviewed on youtube, then it will be worth it. If it's not good and people don't play it, then the popularity system won't make a difference to you anyway.
Never know if you never try. If your idea is good, and you spend a good amount of time on it...then I'm sure other people will spend time playing it. Let Blizzard worry about how their popularity system works.
In the end blizzard will make adjustments to how players find games. The truth though is that so many people are making maps that its hard to get recognized. If its anything like wc3 alot of the enthusism will die out for alot of people trying to make a popular map. But the Hard Core mappers will keep up. If your not really a hard core mapper and not really into the development as a fun way to spend your time Id suggest you, not start your own project unless you really enjoy working on one.
Dota took years on wc3 to actually get to the point that it is at on wc3.
Take a look at most the other games in wc3, most of it is simple mini games nothing too complicated.
So imo its not much differnt from wc3 i made alot of wc3 maps but they never got played lol. although I could host my game and name it in the join screen as "help me test my map" and id ussually get a few people to help me test stuff. Unfortunately this isnt currently possible so its hard to find testers online. But like I said they will be making changes to it. As it stands now im sure they are getting sick of the whining coming from this website alone.

I totally disagree with you there buddy. I don't think that you should ever discourage others from working a creative outlet.
To the OP:
Go outside, get a smoke, and just step away from it for a few days. Everyone is all excited and hoping their map will be "The next DotA", but in reality maybe one of you, will make a map like that. You just have to focus on making it a fun experience for yourself.
Debates has gotten all the way up to the second or third page in popularity. But its very likely blizzard will fix the popularity system, since they have about 9000 requests on their website. So make map, and you can release it hear at sc2mapster, as well as battle net once bizzard fixes this.

Feel free to Send me a PM if you have any questions/concerns!
Here is the thing you have to remember. Making the map is you flexing your creative legs. If all you care about is becoming famous then you are in this for the wrong reasons. My current map is my take on the DoTA formula and its a huge project that will take probably the better part of a year to get ready to do open beta. I am in no rush right now and I will probably release some smaller projects along the way but I know for sure that I am going to promote the map from now until release.
Regular updates on sites like this, youtube videos detailing mechanics, tutorials to help players. Get your name and product out there so "fans". Its those fans that will try your game when you release it and if its good, if you put your heart into it. Then maybe they will make it popular. But be ready to flop. Be ready to have 0 games played an hour.
Same thing happens to game developers every year. They call it a bomba.
Not only do I understand your concern but a while ago I felt exactly the same way.
Basically what I realised is, even if they keep the current popularity system for customs (which I think won't happen) one thing they do plan to implement is clans
Clans will make finding people to play with for the less popular custom maps infinitely easier. You will get clans for a specific map, clans who just love any custom maps, and clans for friends who will test your maps with you.
So I'd say definitely keep going with your map, its early days mate and things will always get better for us - the community will make sure of that

You need luck, and promote your map on diffrend sites. And you need to update your map a few times a day.

Its all gravy. I suppose I read you incorrectly.
Overall, don't give up OP :)
Eh, I've made maps nobody played, I'm written books barely anyone has read. I don't make things to please others, I make things I can feel proud of.

make friends and invite them over to your map, word of mouth will spread if your game is good.

I'm pretty sure there will be additional ways of finding custom games through Battle.net in a future patch. This was mentioned during beta.
