I love TD maps and I'm making one myself. However, I never played WC 3 so I'm kind of confused about what people expect when they want to play a TD map in SC 2.
The TD I'm making at the moment is going to be a 1-2 player map and if you want to play 2 players, you'll have to co-operate. It will probably also be required that the two players are kind of on the same page when it comes to knowing the map, as you'll have to plan when building and upgrading.
However, when I go online in SC 2 to check out some other TD maps, all I find are these multiplayer maps where everyone's pretty much doing their own thing and everything is fairly straight forward. It doesn't feel like we're playing with each other as much as we're playing against each other which makes me a little uncertain about what people want in a TD map.
The reason I'm making this topic is because I'm making the map for other people to play. So if everybody expects the TD maps to be straight forward with almost no need for co-op, then I fear that I'm going to have a hard time getting people to play my map on Bnet. So, are there people out there who enjoy complex TD's with a lot of depth?
Please, feel free to put that idea into action. I myself don't care for the TD maps where every player has their own field. My favorites were the ones in SC1/WC3 where all players get to build all over the same wave path. There have also been very complex TDs with researches, upgrading and a bunch of co-op features.
I would not use the current published maps as a means to judge what SC2 is capable of or what everyone expects of it. The first UMS maps for SC2 are going to simply be duplicates or remakes of old maps. I'm sure it'll be a while before we start to see any maps that make real good use of the new editor.
That said, a 2-player TD requiring co-operative work sounds awesome.
I agree with all that. I don't much like TDs, bit too passive for me, but I -really- don't like TDs where players are totally isolated. That's not multiplayer at all! I think that some pretty sweet cooperative mechanics would make TDs much more fun.
