Basically I'm wanting to be able to have multiple data windows open at the same time, so I can edit the settings of one unit, while looking at another unit for comparison.
Especially during my initial learning stages, I'm wanting to see how other units are setup to make sure I am configuring things correctly. However having to constantly switch between units within the same window is proving to be a HUGELY time consuming process. I am forever 'losing my spot'.
Anyway, if your PC is strong enough you can use virtualbox. It's a free oracle product that emulates a computer inside your computer. You can install in it an operating system and sc2; and then open the editor inside the virtual box and outside of it at the same time.
You should also be able to drag-select multiple data items. it's basically just like windows or many other programs. the data objects will then appear next to one another.
There is no way, as far as I've determined, to have multiple maps open at once. You can switch between them quickly without having to reload the map but actually having 2 next to each other is basically impossible. I would go with Cacho's method.

XViper wants to compare different data objects in different maps. Your method requires the objects all to be in the same map.
This can be done with SandBoxie. Download an unregistered version (google it - or here: http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?DownloadSandboxie) and use if for a single sandbox.
Run the SECOND copy of the editor in the single (default) sandbox.
I use it for side-by-side editing. (which can even be done on the same map, as SandBoxie creates a temporary (virtual) copy first) - any updates (accidental or deliberate to the boxie version simply dont get saved) - make the updates on the not-boxie version.

I believe that it isn't supported.

hold ctrl and left-click any number of data objects.
Thanks Cacho. I obviously was hoping not to have to resort to such extreme measures.
@Outsider, that doesn't do anything for me?
