Blizzard seems strict about copyrights and whatnot regarding maps on bnet 2.0
so i was wondering are maps based on books, movies, etc, ok? or will these be banned
for example, a map called Starship troopers based on the movie, a map called Aliens vs Predators
a map called Scott Pilgrim vs the world, or a map based on the 7 samurai movie by Akira kurosawa
would these be allowed or banned?
just wondering as i develop my map, what is really allowed
Im sure they will be banned for anything that mildly breaks soem hidden rule blizzard made. I would assume they just dont want to get sued by the company that made the movie you used. So if its a big, popular movie, the chances of the map getting banned are very high. After all, one map got banned because the units formed the nazi symbol on the minimap. SERIOUSLY?? omg. I understand why blizzard wants to keep that symbol out of maps..but units on the minimap?? Jeez. Anyway, if your map is inspired by a movie, but its not a total copy and the movie is not popular, you might get away with it. I guess that means I can't make halo wars for sc2... darn

IMO: Calling a map starship troopers is probably fine. Importing a section of the movie into your map however wouldn't be.
I remember some L4D map floating around that had almost all the sounds from L4D imported directly into it. I haven't seen it recently so I assume it was removed.
I also remember seeing something about importing EvE Online models directly into your map. I am sure CCP wouldn't be happy with that as all the information is housed on blizzard servers.
this is a no-brainer, anything that will infringe copyright law will never be allowed by blizzard to be on their servers.
be sure to use self-made or legal free stuffs only on your maps.

Runling run got removed as well, since it had music that wasn't theirs on it.
