I loved the wc3 editor and i got pretty good at it, just never made any games that hit off.
However when i go through the SC2 editor, it gives me a headache to look at it. Ive started looking at the tutorials and the sheer number of them make me think i'll be reading/probing around for weeks or even months before i get the BASICS down.
Is it seriously that hard? I only have 1 map in mind right now. I know certain things will be difficult such as attachment points and keyboard controls and HUD stuff, but so far to me it seems like the most basic triggers (Unit enter region, X happens) are complex as well.
yes its difficult. and it will always be difficult. you can yell at blizzard and everything but most of us love the option. love the amount we can do and would not change it for the world.
if you want any tips. don't start with a to hard to create map. start simpel. try out some basic stuff. (attachment points etc are not basic)
try some simple triggers. and move up harder and harder.
for the tutorials. just read the ones you think you need for your map. there are indeed loads. but don't think you need all of them.
I just started with something and learn while i build. downloaded some other maps. see how other peep done it and try to do it myself. learn while trying.
Gl with your map. if you really wane get into the editor I'm sure we will see a topic with a map of yours in the future :P
Right i know i need to start with simple maps like a dummy map to figure out how to use HUD arrangements. I just always felt it best to have a larger project in the field to aim for, which also gives me ideas on which fields in the editor i need to learn since there are soooo many.
The sheer amount of data in any of the tutorials ive seen, especially triggers, are probably what set me off. I managed to figure a large bulk of wc3 triggerings out on my own somehow.
I think the unit editor is worse than triggers to figure out from scratch but i havent attempted to learn that one yet. Probably shoudve since triggers are pointless without units lol.
It's mostly not hard, and even more complex triggers are easy/fun to create. But the data editor is the most annoying piece of ever. But I guess there's no way around it with so many options, attributes, etc. 1 little thing can be the difference between a working map and a non-working one. This is coming from someone who never used a map editor before, though.
I know how you feel right now, I felt the same way a few weeks ago. I remember thinking that this is impossible and I'll never be able to make a map. As long as you want to do it you will learn pretty quickly. Make your maps while following the tutorials, that's what helped me a ton. Don't make things exactly how a tutorial says make it how you want it in your map using the tutorial to help. It might seem really confusing at first, but its just different. For units, I normally duplicate them in parts for less work. It's a lot easier to change a few models and values than to find all the right actors, effects, and behaviors you want.
The map editor is pretty decent and if you have the ambition and willpower you can learn it without too much issue.
With that said, if you're used to the WC3 editor (like I am), doing SIMPLE F*CKING THINGS with the data editor (ie changing unit values or creating new units) takes about 10x as long as it used to. It's overcomplicated to the point of stupidity.
It could have been made a lot simpler while retaining the complexity, even a simple "new unit wizard", so I refuse to hear arguments to the contrary. Huge design oversight in my opinion. It's flexible and complex, sure, but doing simple things still takes way too long.

Nah, making triggers is still simple. Only fractionally harder than in SC1's editor, I feel.

It´s not that difficult once you get in
Just try around for a bit and the rest comes naturally.
