According to Blizzard, publishing a map with locked status should lock the map, even for the author (why you are also recomended to keep a copy). This somewhat quote is back from the beta days.
I have published my map locked on EU ( http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/core-zero ) but can still open the map file. Does thsi mean my map isn't locked? This prevents me from uploading the map to mapster, since anyone could download it and publish as their own.
Does anyone know of a way to get the locked wversion of the map that is actually published on bnet, so that I can upload it?
I am asuming that people can download a lcoked map and play it. Is there a point in distrubuting your map through web pages, as a locked map? I mean, on bnet you can only create games with popular maps, or maps played within the recent hour, unless you publish the map yourself. Is the system that broken, or is it me not getting it correctly?
they can't open your map itself. But you still have the project map, a version that can't be really locked. Once you publish it converts it from a Project file to a map file, then locks it. So unless you hand out your Project file, no one can edit the one you uploaded to B.net.
All I have is .SC2Map -files. If those are project files, where are the map files kept? Is there a folder for map files downloaded from/published on bnet?
And .. will it make a difference? People will be albe to open my map in the editor, but not publish it. So they can play test from the editor, but will it make a difference on bnet if they have the map when creating a custom game?
There is a folder for B.net maps, but the data is unreadable by the map editor (unless you crack it and convert the files to readable files). So they aren't able to open it in the editor, unless you hand them the file, if you do hand them the file then I don't think it will allow them to publish it because it was made by you. (The last part I'm not 100% but when you go to publish it has your name in a grayed area so it can't be edited.)
ok, so wheres the bnet map folder? cant find it. So if I upload my locked map file, people will be able to open it in th editor, but not publish it.. so how then will that help ppl to play the map? There is no other option when you host a game than playing popular maps and your own published...
OR will ppl be able to publish my map för themselves, so that they can create games, only not save the map or change the author name?
From what I know, people can't even open your map if it's been "Published" and it's under 'Locked'. (Although I think there are programs that can crack open the folder/files and allow editing) The actual files that are uploaded are changed to a different computer language that only StarCraft 2 (or the program I talked about a second ago) can open. It doesn't Lock your actual Editor Map Files, or at least it doesn't lock mine. (And i've published a single map 20 times, but they are still able to be edited by me.) So otherwise Locking is just to make you feel more safe. As far as where said B.net map folders are, I have no idea, I haven't even found them yet myself.
Ok to simplify things, your map made in your hard drive (.sc2map) is always the unlocked file. When you publish the map as unlocked, it take a copy of your current .sc2map and upload it to battlenet sever. If its locked, it first lock that copy of your map before uploading to the sever. Other people when play your map download map from the sever directly to their hard drive (in a cache folder I dont remember exactly where.) These map are renamed with its harsh value and with extension .sc2ma , These map (if the author locked) is the one that you cannot edit
Thank you Prog, that was quite clarifying. I thought this was common knowledge where to find those files and upload them on map databases - how else distrubute your locked maps, with bnet custom map system broken and all.
Hmm.. theres a lot of files in X:\Users\meltyruz\AppData\Local\Blizzard Entertainment\Battle.net\Cache but none with the .sc2ma extension that I can see.
Supose I find the file and upload it .. anyone who dowload my locked map will be able to test in by drag and drop onto the sc2 exe or shortcut, right? Untill the custom game bnet feature allows players to host games with downloaded maps, this wills till not help anyone to play the map online, right?

try moving that locked map to another computer such as your laptop or something, and see if you can open it?
ANybody got a clue on how to reach locked maps you either downloaded or published?
