A buddy told me, he discovered a cool method to organize data objects. Since I did not find this anywhere else, I just wanted to share this discovery really quick:
(well, I did not remove my prefixes I previously used for organization just yet)
As you can see, the units are categorized in custom subfolders (which is an awesome feature and should be implemented by blizzard right away!).
Unfortunately, this does not work that way for all data objects (units works well, effects and actors... not so much), and it is a little hack-ish.
First make sure to enable the "Display Objects List as Tree" view option. You will notice, that the units are sorted and "sub-foldered" by object Family (Melee, Campaign etc), by race (Protoss, Zerg, Terran...) and by Object Type (Unit, Hero, Item, Projectile...).
You can change those by modifying the Editor - Editor Categories or Stats - Race fields. Usually, you can only pick the present categories.
However, you can switch to raw data view, and just enter any string you like. The editor will move the data objects into the according new subfolders.
They will not appear in the selection list for the Gui, however, so you need to edit the fields in raw data for every unit (copy&paste does work as well).
For other data objects, this does not work THAT good, you might only be able to modify one or 2 of those, also there might be subfolders you cannot edit (for example you can only edit the race for effects, and they are always subfoldered by their type; you seem to not be able to get rid of this categorization).
Note that the method might be unstable, my buddy warned me about an incident, where he lost all of his categorizations made using this method.
Also note that messing with the race could have influence on the game, so you might probably want to avoid that.
Credits to Kroemel for finding this.
(*secretively hopes for native support by Blizzard*)
Pretty cool, and yea, it should be fixed by blizzard. The current system is crap and it would be nice to be able to make our own subfolders without hackish methods or fear of losing the categories.
If it hasn't been done already, perhaps post this on the BNet forums as a suggestion for improvements to the Editor.
