The challanges seemed to be more of a hit than anything else last week, hopefully this weeks is a bit easier for people to be able to come up with something!
Weekly Data Exercise #5
Allright this one should be a little easier for everyone. We are going to be working with a missile movers this week, Basically you can create a new mover from scratch or you can edit one allready implemented and just show what your new mover does. To give those new to movers a little bit of a push here is a tutorial to show you just some of the stuff you can do with movers: http://forums.sc2mapster.com/resources/tutorials/4855-data-customized-movers-advanced-difficulty/
Challenge
Challenge 1
At blizzcon they showed us an awesome way of creating guided missiles, if you fast forward to 6.20 in the video you will see the battle cruiser with this effect. Challenge 1 is to recreate this missile!
Challenge 2
Similar to the Challenge above but much more like a cluster grenade. Challenge is to create a cluster missile, one that explodes just before impact to several more smaller missiles that fly off in random directions and explode after a short random distance travelled away from the original.
Challenge 3
Boomerang - Yes, that is pretty much all I am going to say. A missile that flys off in one direction impacting with targets on the way and returns to the caster.
Allright how about I start this weeks off. I have adusted the photon cannon missile to lob at enemies rather than fire direct, I also had to modify the photon missle actor to destroy the actor because it is no longer guided.
sorry for the bad quality video, what type of video do people use to upload to youtube?
I followed THE GOD DAMN FKING tutorial to the letter and my movers never work. I mean, I tried making the wraith shoot out EVERY type of missile in that tutorial and it always ends up not working. It will start off working just fine, and then the missile accelerates on its own to like 300000 speed and explodes on impact but won't do any damage.
My end goal is to have the wraith shoot out both missiles into high altitude, and then having them spiral downwards and track the target and cause impact.
In my experience it took me a while to grasp how blizzard made missiles work and what you want to do, while sounding totally awesome, seems like it might be a bit complicated. I'll definitely be checking back for that though, so I hope you get it done.
I gave up trying to make my own custom movers. I copied Drunken Missile mover and applied them to the Wraith's Gemini Missiles (Renamed to Yellow Jackets), and made the wraith shoot 8 of them at once.
One thing I noticed is that the Custom Movers tutorial seems completely wrong. Nothing matched up from the Drunken Missile mover to the tutorial's Spiral missiles, or how to make them spiral, or anything. Everything seems backwards, and I mean no offense to ProzaicMuze, but I think some things have changed since the tutorial was put up??
Anyways, I modified several fields to make the missiles have a tighter spiral, and less of a "wide" and "Weird" pattern. The missiles still move randomly in the spiral however. Easily noticeable because you can see the individual missiles.
Basically it was just a bunch of random tweaks until I got sick of switching windows 3 trillion times.
Oh and... yes that is a Jackson's Merc Battlecruiser, and I guess my Wraith was within the minimum range of 2 for the "super weapon" so it uses the weaker weapon, which happens to be EXTREMELY weak because I didn't lose a single Wraith in that test. But usually it's a much closer battle than that!
I made all my movers based on that tutorial and everything works fine.
The 2 different weapons of the Jackson's Revenge cause exactly the same damage. It seems to me, that your missiles deal damage in a small AoE and don't filter enemy missiles out, so they destroy a good amount of the laser shots, before they can reach the wraith. The long range weapons do not use a projectile and cause damage with every shot (just from the looks of it - I could be completely wrong).
€ the mover you described probably should look something like that?:

You won't get better than 480p video if your resolution in SC2 is lower than 720(width).
720p is not width, but heigth. 720p is 1280x720 pixels, 1080p is 1920x1080, 480 is 640x480 (or 854x480? Dunno, I read somewhere that <720p everything on youtube is 4/3 ratio, but when I watch a 480p on youtube, it looks pretty widescreen to me)
I use a 1280x1024 (non-widescreen) monitor and SC2 resolution, so I cannot record more than 720p. I use Camtasia Studio to record, modify and compress, which is more than enough for me. It has a predefined HD youtube video setting, I dont have to care about anything.
Woops, nice catch on the width! hehe, if I would have thought about it for a minute I would have realised, lol, because I use 1680x8?? resolution for SC2, hehe.
You are probably right on the short range weapon being missile based. I know that the long range weapon is just an impact effect kind of like the marine. I didn't think that the missile for the Short Range weapon would be targetable, but you are correct, I did not set ANY filters to the AOE Damage. So I guess it will even target invuln missiles. My bad!
Good video, btw! That's pretty much exactly what I was going for.
I don't know what I was doing wrong, but I tried doing just Spiral missile exactly specified in the tutorial, and every other exactly specified, then I tried combining different types of motion phases, to get like, a grenade lobbing arc, then a straight down guidance, then some zig zag... I tried it all. :\
If you take a look at the Drunken Missile mover, there are 2 Motion Phases and 2 Motion Overlays(or whatever it's called) and they don't "link up" the same way that the tutorial would suggest (Outro [-1,-1] in a Motion Phase).
Anyways, I think that's it for me for Movers. I like enjoying myself while in the DE, otherwise I just get bored. DE is the only reason I still have SC2 Installed. :\
Movers =D I have only recently started working with this area of the editor so I am rather excited about seeing what people come up with. Quick question, is it possible to have say the hellion's flame or the void ray's beam travel in a spiral similar to missiles, because personally i think that would make some awesome effects.
There is a field called Alignment, which, I thought, would be responsible for this. You can choose Positive, Negative, Random and Alternating for it, but my missiles seem to rotate in a random direction every time (I wanted the alternating way, where both launched missiles always rotate in the opposite direction, but could not get it to work until now. Still trying, though)
Unfortunatly as far as I can see, the hellion flame is created by a "create persistent effect", with several different offsets. So it is not done by mover, I am not sure if it is at all possible to make the flame spiral, or have it attack spiral by a mover.
Challanges will be uploaded to first post a little later this morning
Tried that already and as you say, that doesn't work.
I hated how the Burst missile turned so vigorusly between phases so I gave it a Dynamic Parabola. I wanted the missiles revolve around like a minigun barrel in the Guidance phase but that means I need a way to make all 4 missile turn the same way.
Most likely I cannot participate for this week's challenges. My hard drive killed itself, right now I have no access to the editor and in 2 days I will be away and most likely not come back before 2011. Maybe I will submit some delayed attempts for the challenges then, if not that many other submissions should come up.
Yes I will be putting up another extended one on the 24th that will run over the christmas break and into the new year, it will be a bit bigger so you can work on it for a bit longer. It may give people some time to try out previous exercises too

Have an Idea for the WDE, post it here!
Why not turn your results into an asset for others to use!

I use Virtual Dub 1.9.10 to compress my videos with the XVid MPEG-4 Codec, and I save the output file as AVI

Can you set the direction of revolution of a Revolver? (Not neccessarily done in the overlay)

I quite like the look of that mover, its not designed to the point where it looks completly silly, the mover feels realistic
I'm going to leave this weeks WDE open for a bit longer, with the rush before christmas I'm sure everyone is a little busy, including myself
I just can't understand the movers (also not likely to be as useful as other objects). Give up before I start to waste time on movers.
PS I went to a camp for a couple of days so it's nice that you keep this WDE up.
Vid + minor edit
I hope this WDE continues. I enjoy watching all the videos that you guys come up with and hope I will be able to grasp it sometime too!
