I don't think this is possible but I just want to check, is it possible (purely through data, cause i can trigger this to make it work), to give a unit abilities that can cause items in inventories to use their abilities (Aka i give a hero a fireball staff, and they can use an inventory ability to cause the inventory items ability to cast (not through using the inventory item, but through an ability on the unit that causes the inventory item to do so)
the item, can of course, have a behaviour that shows an ability to you through requirements (the unit already has the ability then), but you would need really complex req to make it work with several abilities (to be shown on command card at the right spot) and the limit of 32 abilities is basically a too hard limitation.
with triggers you could have dummy abilities and replace the icon, tooltip, cost (but not the target filters) and/or work with the switch effect to sort the abilities on the command card and to allow an endless amount of different items.

Still alive and kicking, just busy.
My guide to the trigger editor (still a work in progress)
nope (had to be 4 characters)
