I think the model's selection radius is just "how big the circle is".
Look in the previewer what the model's bounding sphere is, is it some very large value? I could be mistaken but selection appears to use the model's bounding sphere (also used for frustum geometry occlusion) rather than any data...
Fix it by changing the model scale for required size in the 3d max.
P.S: And yeah... bounding sphere was hidden in the 3dmax.. may be that why it cant be scaled in the galaxy)
There was also some flag that by disabling it could fix it. Maybe the Actor - Add to Proximity System flag. Look up the thread about the WOW dragon model with the same problem.

Disabled actor's "model flag" named "allow hit test". So the unit become unselectable.
Then i've attached to the actor the same model with reduced scale, and enabled "allow hit test" for this attached model. And then I made this attached model transparent (set opacity).
But usually, when you export wow models via wowmodelwiever with default 0.5 scale factor, they have no such issue.
And tell me, why do you use 3dsmax when wowmodelviwer exports models right to .m3?
Cus I like models via Blizzard style with 4 sorts of textures and trying to do that with WoW models... not like one button export-import. P.S: As I said attach model method boooored

Ok. Have custom unit with model from WoW. Works fine. But if I'll click some where near my unit this will select it. See screenshot f.e. Can I fix it?

Under the model data type there are fields for the selection offset/radius. Try editing those. This is a common problem for imported models.

By the way, nice artwork ;)

If it's a custom model, can't you just edit it and fix the bounding sphere radius?
Bounding sphere is bugged (or something)... and also without good results. Tried to remove it, change sizes - nothing good too.

I've fixed this issue this way:
