I'm trying to make an ability that shoots a beam straight down from an air unit to the ground forever until cancelled. The beam also gets stronger over time.
This creates the beam and makes it last forever since the create persistent is looped to itself,
but I can't cancel the ability & the damage isn't getting increased (but the buff is being applied).
Look how the void ray does it. Have a Behavior ability that applies your basic buff that applies a periodic Switch effect. The switch then uses the number of a counter buff to determine which Create Persistent effect to use. The peristent effects then like the void ray on completion add a counter buff that is recognised by the switch validators. Each persistent effect then does your search + damage effects.

Instant effect

That makes sense and shouldn't be too bad, but how can I make it so that the beam can be cancelled at any time?
No behaviour, no persistent, no beam. That is one of the good uses of the Behavior ability in that it can be toggled like the cloak abilities.
