I was wondering if it was possible to use 3ds max to make a SC2 style jedi hero model for a tps I want to make. The hero would be able to throw the lightsaber forward and have it spin then return to the hero, "saber throw" and another ability that made units be forced backwards (force push). He also would need to have a block animation with the weapon.
I don't want to bother anyone but since I can't make it myself (no modeling skills/ or 3ds) A) how hard it would be B) how long it would take C) how much they would want in return (if this is some transfer money payment thing then sorry, no can do)
Also, the idea is basically to take the zealot model, make him a human, and give him a one handed weapon instead of two one handed ones. Of course you would get credit, I'm not that stingy :)
I hope I was clear enough but if someone was to do this the only reward I have to offer is heavy TYs and your name on the map
Do you know what Blizzard does? First they create dummy units and abilities in the Data Editor that resemble the desired functionality of a new unit. Once they have what they need they toss it to the artists who then create the model, skin and animations.
Why do I write this? If you did the same and proved to people that you can actually bring a map to life then you would get many, many responses of people willing to create what you want.
in wow ... I know theres at least 1 sword model that looks like a light saber... you could attach that to any units hand... you could also use it as a missile ammo unit and make it spin as it whips around hittting stuff...
for a "jedi" you could possibly find a unit in wow that is a "robed- figure"

I guess I need to learn what I actually want done before I ask for a model to use the stuff with. Getting too eager I guess... Anyway, I do not know how to do this "dummy unit" you speak of. For one thing, none of the animation that I know of, are what I want. How do you make custom animations/abilities?
Nobody will take me serously unless I have some evidence to present. So I guess this is all I can say about the project for now.
The map will be roughly based off the series Starwars Battlefront, with heroes that the best players on each team get the opportunity to use. If your unit dies, your team loses a unit count.
For the hero, I'd like an "unlock time" of 3 minutes. Therefore, every 3 minutes there isn't a hero, the game picks the best two players (one per team) and gives them an opportunity to become the ultimate unit in the game, the "jedi" hero. He has a timed lifespan but every kill gotten will replenish the timer, as well as some HP.
There wil also be vehicles and turrets on the battlefront that can be entered and used. Tanks for starters. The unit class you spawn as has unique abilities such as: place auto turret, a rocket launcher or grenades. You can heal at certain stations near the command posts that you must capture to gain points.
The team that: A) kills all unit tickets first B) captures every Command Post on the field and there are no enemies left C) gets to the target points first, will win the game.
This map is a complete concept except for terrain at this point. Here are some decent pictures of the map-to-be.
You need to make the entire map FIRST. Then ask for the models and art to be created. Doing it this way lets people know they're work will not be wasted.

well, I was hoping that I could get someone to make a model where the "lightsaber" is not actually attached to the model, just positioned in the guys hand. That way, I can seperate the abilities that involve the unit and the weapon into individual parts. Also, isn't this proof enough? I need a good unit in order to have cool abilities because I can't just make an ability in midair...

you can do that with a "tree" create a behavior... and create and actor for the behavior... that attachs a "tree" to the units "hand - attachment point"
not sure what you mean by "spin into the enemy"........ thats a photon cannon... that he makes spin... through data stuffs
well mabye it is a "saw" i cant really tell.... but you can place actors on it that make it spin....
or you can create actor events that rotate the actor as its in flight...
the point is people want to see you have some "mad" data skills before they even bother with donating thier time to you....
meh Ive tried to get some custom models done.... but unless its an extremely simple model .... most people are not going to be interested...
Ive played many a starwars games where you can throw lightsabers....... what matters is that it spins... and does damage to enemies...
why are you concerned about how it spins.... when you dont even have a model for it nor a working ability to even use it with....
not to sound too ... asshole like .... but apparently you missing the point here.
for starters I suggest you use the .... shapecylinder model and scale it to where about you want a lightsaber.... the spinning and such would be data controlled anyways... since it doesnt have a "spin" animation.... which is what your asking for .... which your not gonna get.... unless you find somebody that is really nice that has 3d max or some such program
you can attack the actor discussed here to another actor to make it spin
SIGH* I was kinda hoping someone could use 3ds to make an actual weapon animation for this...... I want the actual weapon to cause the damage. Not some light bending magic (it matters A LOT to me) Sure, I can make the damage and stuff, that's not the issue. But without something to work from, the new weapon itself, how can I? I do not want to make something using some darn tube :( Sorry, now I don't want to sound "asshole like"
O :( Is that just for the lighting or the entire spinning blade? I'll attempt to add some abilities to a zealot as a start... Good enough until I can get REAL ideas.

As far as vehicles go, feel more than free to use my Snow Speeder model http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/snow-speeder-model/ (with due credit of course)

You wouldn't happen to have a speeder bike would you?

it may not be fun to use ... prisoners as jedi's and trees for light sabers at the start but it gets the nitty gritty job done.... then you say
hey guys check out my sweet map... it just needs some custom art work done for it
and then people go ... hell yeahs... Ill make you a custom model....
or after your done... you have time to do the modeling yourself......
heres an example of the possible lightsaber throw

as you can see.... his "ion saw" is actually the "que photon cannon model" but yeah i hope you get the idea

BTW tfighter...... it looks like you need a new shiney unicorn avatar
what I mean is that the weapon spins into the enemy like it wants to cut them in half at the waist. Have you never played SC battlefront?

the tut doesnt cover spinning directly but you should be able to figure it out if you try

Lightsabers can be rather problematic atm since the current exporter does not support any effects.

I agree with other comments.
Create your map and once you're almost ready to release it, ask for help again.
