the background needs to be transparent.. and its not since there was no alpha mask/channel. because i had to converted to jpeg before editing in photoshop because the nvidia plugin dosnt support a few "btn" .dds file. (including btn-techupgrade-terran-nuclearstrike)
so... your going to have to get someone to "cut" it out for you.
unless you can get ahold of the original alpha channel and replace it with the none working one.
Well for war3, there was a cool tool War3Viewer, which auto added alpha channels onto icons for you. Wonder if that will still work, or someone may make a similar tool for SC2.
EDIT: I think it was specifically made for 64x64 icons :-(
A guy told me to do the following:
- Use Gimp to open up image.
- Add an Alpha Channel layer.
- Save the file as .dds with with BC3/DXT5 compression.
- Import and it should work.
It still unfortunately blocks out buttons completely, as in the picture in first post.
Has anyone been able to add alpha layers to Icons for SC2. If so how please?

So I imported my first custom Icon, it works fine, except it now visually blocks buttons behind it.
When I use standard sc2 icons, they don't and can have them together, i.e. making a click able icon.

Oh thanks. Is there a method in which I can achieve the same with the colored/altered icon version?
I used photoshop sc5 and a few different different brushes then overlaid a slight "Smoke/bomb?" texture.

Oh sorry, I meant adding an alpha channel, so it can be used in the Editor to overlap buttons etc.
