Right now im working on a skybox(sphere) that will follow your unit around. It's the SM - Valerian Observatory Set2. This unit has a star background/skymap adjustable to any size. I uploaded a new sky image and changed its path to the image that the SM - Valerian Observatory Set2 unit had(i found this from the preview of the model). The new image that was supposed to replace the old star image, doesn't show up inside the skybox, it just shows the old original version instead. If you know of any way on how to change this image or another way to do this please let me know.
The previewer said that the material used was the T1_sm_Hyperion_starfield4.dds. This is the file I tryed to swap my new background image for. Also pleae let me know if this was the wrong path. Thanks
As far as I know you still need to edit the model file itself to replace the texture it uses in order to change the texture file. Importing and setting the texture to replace the existing one still doesn't work. I haven't done extensive testing on this since patch 1.2 but I believe when I tried the Editor kept freezing or crashing so I would assume it still doesn't work. Best bet is to hex edit the model file and change the texture to the imported texture file (change the name slightly while keeping the same length).
You are able to change unit textures just by adding a new image to the file with the same name as the diffuse image uses. This should have been the same here but it doesn't work for this unit.
So how am I going to hex edit the unit model? I never heard of this before, so im clueless.
Anytime I have tried to just change the unit textures by replacing it with the same name it doesn't do anything. Same path, same name, same format, everything. It never changes the texture. As I said I think I tried it since patch 1.2 and it just froze or crashed my editor. Maybe it's just me but I have never been able to replace a unit texture just by importing the texture itself. I have always had to change the unit's model to use different textures. Maybe I will have to mess around more with it and try it again.
You can download a free hex editor and search the texture file inside the model file and rename it to your custom texture file. Then import the custom texture and model then set the unit's model file to use your custom model file. It's not extremely hard so it shouldn't be too difficult, it sounds harder than it is.

I think there's a tutorial for this somewhere...
