I've been working on button icons for units...So far, I've mostly edited out old ones from the beta or ones from mods, to make them fit with the current in-game icons, in terms of light reflection, tint, team color, brightness, contrast and what not. I've even created some from snapshots in the editor and in videos.
Tell me what you guys think and let me know if you want more...I can't provide .dds format at the moment (so you'll have to convert them), but I may eventually do so.
If you can pick them up and convert them to properly working .dds with correct alpha channels, feel free to do so.
I've updated it with quite a few new unit icons. =)
I specifically made a new icon for the Corruptor (The one in-game is old, it's based on the model at the Zerg reveal back in March 2008) and the Blizzard version of the Guardian, based on the prologue that's played during the SC2 installation (They can be seen attacking the space platform above Tarsonis). It's basically an edited Swarm Guardian model. (Just cut out the head and used that)
I've even added a new Firebat icon! The one in the game is also based on a model from an old alpha build.
I really badly want to use a bunch of these, but how exactly should I go about doing alpha channels in gimp for ones that need them, like the unit icons? I'm really unfamiliar with gimp, I just started using it to do retextures and the like for SC2 - is there an easy way to mass convert the black background to 100% alpha, or do I have to do it by hand?
Here you go, I was going to use many of them, and just decided to do them as a batch. In Gimp, its under Color > Color to Alpha. Also, thanks a lot Alex06

Oh that's cool. I wonder if I could use some of that for team coloring some stuff too...
Thanks btw.
edit: Have you looked at the product of that batch? I feel like a lot of them didn't come out right, as it made them semi-transparent based on how dark the image was or something. Against a black background it looks fine, but they look messed up when I put them against anything else. Haven't tested them in-game yet.
Some of them came out great, but the unit icons in particular are odd looking in previews.
ha, thats exactly what it did, all the black is removed. most of the effect images from blizzard are like that, But I ingame against a normal command card, it should be fine. I guess if youre going to put it against another color, you can always add a new layer, outline the unit, and fill it up with black
Here are three of the lightest ones put in the command card of all three race. the bottom row are just the buttons set to passive. the cannon is just there to compare. they do look a little lighter but it doesnt look too bad compared to the cannon.

Neat, good job. :-)
Here are some ability & upgrade button icons that I've done so far. (colored)
Some of these are from the beta files!
These are really good.
Nice one there Alex!
Whatever you do, wholeheartedly, moment by heartfelt moment, becomes a tool for the expression of your very soul.

I use Photoshop, I'm really used to that. I have the .dds plugin, but I have trouble getting the icons' alpha channels to work properly.

Just installed gimp and loven it :)
Nice icons, thanks for coloring all those ones.

To be fair, it's like you removed the blacks from the image...They didn't come out right.

Against a blank command card, but buttons have race-specific colored backgrounds, and I can't imagine it looking right against those textures.

In fact, they kind of look better transparent. :P
Very nice work...I don't suppose you'd be willing to do icons for Engineers, Colonists, and Scientists?
[Edit]: Are the ones you've displayed here available for anybody to use?
