I am trying to find a reference to the unit skin for the Goliath in the data editor. I want to export it, edit it, and import it as a custom skin that a custom Goliath will use. Can I do this through the editor, or do I need third-party programs to extract and import them (like in WC3)?
In the Previewer, you can also see, which textures are used by the viewed model, if you open the Materials - folders.
Unfortunately, you cannot export the textures directly in the previewer; you can use the Console + Browse - command or select any data or trigger field requiring an image path, search for your desired textures, and just like stated in the previous post, right click -> export.
As for using the texture, you can have a look at this tutorial, this way you can use new skins for units, without actually modifying the unit model or having to override the default textures, making them unuseable.
How are team colors handled in these textures? Are they automatically applied in the same spots no matter what the skin is, or is there a layer, etc. that I should be working with that designates it? Can I designate where the team colors go directly through Photoshop?

Team colors are a delicate matter; the handling differs from model to model. Most models replace all transparency in the diffuse texture with team color (so they probably use a team color layer at the bottom of all other layers), some models glow in team color for all non-transparent areas in the emissive textures. Others cannot glow in team color or dont seem to support team color at all.
If I edit a Marine's texture, for example, the team colors will always stay the same regardless of the edits that I do, then? Since team colors are handled by the models, I'm assuming that I'd have to edit the model if I wish to change where the team colors go? Not that I want to do this, I'm just trying to make sure that I'm safe from editing out the team colors when I edit a unit's skin.
For the marine, all transparent areas in the diffuse texture resemble team color. So if you use a texture without any transparent area, the marine won't show team color; if you use a 100% transparent one, the whole marine will be painted with team color.

Third party apps are best for this. See http://www.galaxywiki.net/MPQ_Exporting for more info. http://www.galaxywiki.net/Custom_Unit_Textures may help also.
Thanks for the info. That video is hard to see, though. I'd like to learn to do it through the data editor so I will continue to look into it.
you can view > rightclick export textures in data, import them with the import tool, edit them with whatever you want
