Forever and a day in the making, here's my take on the legendary UED campaign from Starcraft: Brood War. Nostalgic, faithful to the original, surprisingly fresh at the same time and most of all fun to play are the things I was going for when creating it.
Thanks to a bunch of people including but not necessarily limited to Telenil, christdaugherty, Superfield, Jimm3110, Ultraling, Maverck, GnaReffotsirk for their feedback and/or other (direct or indirect) contributions to this little project. Also thanks to my brother for all the playtesting I made him do, and thanks to all you people for the feedback/support and/or just general interest in the project. Much fun was had making the campaign (among other things), I hope you'll have at least as much fun playing.
Features
- all 8+1 original missions
- original SC1 units and structures with original stats, including custom models
- original SC1 Terran soundtrack
- all the dialogue, voice acting & other miscellaneous text from the original campaign, and more
- classic UED unit decals
- two difficulty levels (maps tested exclusively on Stukov (harder) difficulty, so you can consider it the "default" difficulty)
"Artistic License"
(some notable differences from the original campaign)
- two difficulty levels - with a somewhat more aggressive AI than in the original, in order to provide some challenge to the average player
- all kinds of cinematic/cosmetic flavor
- Duran has the snipe ability because why not

How to play
- extract the mod file (SC1BWmod) to your "Mods" folder in your Starcraft 2 install directory (NOT the folder under "My Documents")
- extract the map pack to the "Maps" folder in your Starcraft 2 install directory (create the folder if it doesn't exist)
- extract the Campaign Launcher & setup to the same "Maps" folder (not the campaign folder)
Campaign Launcher installation:
- launch the Starcraft 2 editor
- open the setup map named SCMRsetup in your Maps folder and click the "test document" button on the top right (or press ctrl+F9)
- wait until the launcher loads and you're at the title screen, then save the game and exit the map (press esc or F10 to open the game menu)
- find the save file (named "Starcraft - Mass Recall" by default) in (your home/documents folder)/Starcraft II/Saves/VersusAI
- copy or move the save file to the saves folder under your account folder (your home/documents folder)/Starcraft II/Accounts/.../.../Saves/Multiplayer (for example; any of the save folders will do)
- Done! You can now log into the appropriate account and load the save from the load game-screen. You can use this save to play each episode.
more info:
- You can copy the save file to whatever accounts you want. For example, if you want to play offline, copy it to your guest account folder.
- If you're unsure of the right folders or can't find the Starcraft II documents folder, log into an account of your choice in SC2, go to the load game-screen, click on a save and click the "show in folder"-button. It will take you to the appropriate saves folder.

topsecret221:
Well you know, that's largely up to Chris. The only "plan" right now is to have all the campaigns support the same mod. But we'll see what happens.
PianoMonkey:
"Not for a while" is the only ETA I can give you at the moment.
Is there an ETA for episode 6? coz I'm stuck on mission 7 (BW ep 6 original) and am hoping that I'll be able to do it with the remake and tehn finially start the starcraft 2 campaign. XD
@topsecret221: Go
We will have to work on the first three episodes a bit when we will switch them to v4.x on the mod. We might make small tweaks to episode III when it happens, but that's about it.
@Jones313: Go
Of course, of course, not trying to argue. Just wondering if there were any plans for another go at it.
@topsecret221: Go
Sure. I agree with you, cinematics and other little extra details here and there make the campaigns more appealing; that's why they're there. Let me just say that everyone seems to have a different idea of what makes a good remake. If asked what kind of extra elements/changes in gameplay people would want to see in a Starcraft remake compared to the original, a lot of people would probably say "nothing, just keep it like it was". The Rebel Yell remake, for example, has been called everything between a carbon copy of the original to being all wrong because there are medics and it's too hard yada yada.
As for episode 3, no one's arguing that the ending can't be done. No doubt the campaign could be better, just like all the other episodes. I should point out that more difficulty options have been added, probably after you've played it. Anyway, I have very little to do with that particular campaign so you'll understand that I don't much feel like arguing it in detail.
@Jones313: Go
Well, a lot of things that made these campaigns memorable and worthwhile (beyond nostalgia) are in small, funny "easter eggs" scattered among the maps and units, in addition to the quality of map design, difficulty, hero design, and ingame cinematics.
I don't have the maps on hand to make a direct comparison right now, but a lot of the maps were missing the flair and creativity brought about in the rest of the vanilla campaign and the Brood War campaign. It's almost a carbon copy of the original, decade-old game with nothing thrown in for the fans. The difficulty is laughable, the maps are okay (but a disappointing drop in quality from the other four campaigns), the heroes are almost copy/pasted from SC vanilla (as opposed to Zeratul having, say, blink in comparison to Kerrigan having snipe), and the ingame cinematics are lacking something awful.
When I loaded up the UED campaign, the prologue was a true delight; I loved it. The quality was wonderful. To boot, I absolutely adored the opening for the first mission, where the CC dropped onto the marine corpse. Enough of these little things lack in Episode III that they deteriorate the overall experience. The most detrimental thing is the lack of the final cinematic... one that is favoured above all by most SC: Vanilla veterans.
It can't be argued that it can't be done, because A) You managed to fit an attempt at the Episode IV ending cinematic into the last level (which I have yet to see, but have been informed that it is quite pleasurable) and B) Someone attempted to make the scene back in beta (), and did so very well considering that most models were not available and people were still figuring out the editor.
Reworked to amend these missing elements, the campaign would be another wonderful addition to the otherwise monumental project that you and the rest of the modders have done so beautifully.
topsecret:
Nope, I don't recall being asked that question before. Not quite sure what you mean by "redone"... Chris has told me he might revisit the campaign and do more updating and whatnot once HotS is out.
njordys:
Thanks. And hey, your comment is highly relevant - besides boosting my ego, the positive feedback deters Blizzard from shutting us down. We have won the crowd, like in that movie, Gladiator. :P
(disclaimer: Blizzard is not really evil. I love Blizzard)
I thought I should wait until I had something more constructive or relevant to say then "thumbs up", but them decided that I want you to know you have a fan :p
This was Very entertaining, and the cinematic where really well done. The game was very challenging (even on easy), and the whole experience made me nostalgic. Good job.
Not trying to sound like a douche, and I'm sure you've had this question before, but what are the chances of Ep III being redone? I mean, chris did a better job than I could have (seeing as I haven't touched the editor), but compared to the rest of the campaigns, it's sort of "meh". I'm sure wuntewaffen would appreciate an ending cinematic for vannila's Protoss campaign.
@Wunterwaffen: Go
Yes, it's very likely we'll have another look at the maps with the HotS editor. Even if only to do some cosmetic changes.
@Jones313: Go
Maybe if you shaved the beard off lol. I wonder if you could shade Orland to make his skin darker. Even if you could, you wouldn't be able to get rid of the mustache. By the way, when Heart of the Swarm comes out, would you remake the ice maps? You did your custom ice tileset very well, but imagine how cool they would be with the real ice tileset from HotS!
@Wunterwaffen: Go
1. Heh. I don't know about that, I think I was mostly influenced by Blizzard. Lots of close-ups etc. All I can say about the BW ending is that it won't be easy to do.
2. To me, there's much more DuGalle than Stukov in that portrait. See how old that guy is? There's a very real possibility that Stukov's and Duran's portraits will be changed, though, but it'll require updates to both the mod and maps.
All I can say about the Dark Archons is that I had nothing to do with them, they came with Maverck's SC2BW mod like all the other SC1 melee units. But yeah, they're pretty cool.
I've played the campaign and here are my thoughts:
1. The cinematics were STUNNING. Even the guys at Blizzard would envy you! I trust you won't dissapoint with the ending cinematic of the Zerg campaign.
2. The portrait for Dugalle should've been stukov's portrait. And Orland for Duran is kinda weird since he should be black, but oh well. Oh, and I forgot to say this last time, but the Dark Archons were impressive! (How did you shade them red?!) Excellent work! I'm looking forward to the Zerg Campaign!
As some of you may have noticed, The Iron Fist v1.01 is out, as well as French and Russian versions. Download links updated (finally). See the download page for what's new.
And with that, I should probably announce my vacation from this project, for an unspecified time. That's not to say it's impossible that I change my mind and do a small update or whatever, but I'm pretty much done for now.
Rest assured, though, that the last episode aka Queen of Blades will be done. Probably not for a while, but it'll be done. And there'll be more updates and all that in the future. Thanks for playing, and enjoy the summer.
Muspelli:
Having said all that, yeah I have to say, that does seem somewhat interesting.

@Telenil: Go
Fair enough. It's a very minor change, I could easily do it myself since I am very much a stickler for team colours :P.
One more question, is there a chance you could use the custom Duran model someone made in this? Link: http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/brood-war-terrain/
@Muspelli: Go
I've pondered the idea, in my personal opinion it would be too much of a deviation from the original game, so I would rather keep the old colors and use the KMC decal on each enemy. However, what I would do is to combine the kills/loss for all the enemies in a single line (we've done it in a few levels over the campaigns), and write the name in green. That would be a nod to the lore while still keeping the level as close as possible to the original.
A mild little point that would annoy me slightly if it isn't the case, given how easy it would be to implement: is the KMC from episode VI going to be all green (be it regular green or that dark green colour -- I think player 14)? I know you've been attentive to detail in the past in regards to that (making Omega Squadron and Atlas Wing black).
