I have never heard of this map nor have I gotten a chance to play it just yet, so this map will be new for everyone, :).

For those of you looking to go to this years BlizzCon, the ticket sales dates have just been announced. They will go on sale in two different batches, one on May 21st at 10AM PST and the other on May 25th at 7PM PST. In addition, you can purchase the Virtual Ticket for $39.99, though the sale date for that has not yet been revealed.

One thing to mention is that Patch 1.3.2 has gone live, with some minor bug fixes, and the introduction of the Grandmaster League, which has also just gone live... So for those of you following the pro scene, you can now view the top 200 players on all realms.

SC1 Campaign by Jones313 and Ultraling

How many people thought playing SC1 on the SC2 engine would be simply epic? I know I did. Thankfully, these two have made it possible! Thus far, the twosome have created the classic Terran and Zerg campaigns, though i'm sure the rest will be out soon enough. Now before I get into the awesomeness that this campaign is, I should mention that this would not be possible without Maverck's SC2BW Mod, which ported all the SC1 units into the SC2 engine.

Now... This campaign series has basically taken the original SC1 campaigns (so far just the Terran and Zerg) and given them a little spin. Anyone remember the old briefing room? That's back in here, along with the NPC animations and transmissions, so you're getting the full campaign from this. Husky, who has become a household name for any SC2 gamer, has chosen to cast himself playing through these missions. Below is the first video of the series, you can watch more in this thread.

Henchman Adventures by DrHu

This is a TPS map that was based off of Metal Gear and GTA. Essentially, you are given one Hecnhman and your goal is to take control of the districts throughout the map, all while finding parts to build a giant robot (or death ray). The cool thing about this map is that you can choose your story. While doing the missions, you'll have a chance to control ships and/or fleets... So you can either hijack an enemies ship, or you can take the high road and steal an unoccupied one. The game also sports a 6-player multiplayer where you can make alliances with other players, or work alone. That in mind, the less players you align yourself with, the higher score you'll receive when it comes to ranking after the game ends. The higher your ranking, the better ships and weapons you can potentially receive, so choose your allies carefully.

Now, this all sounds great, but how well was the game implemented? I have to admit, I really love this gameplay system... It kinda reminds me of a combination of Metroid and Zelda, check out the video below to see what i'm talking about.

Mafia by DarkRevenantX

Mafia is basically a faithful rendition of the party game of the same name. At a basic level, Mafia is like Survivor With Guns. At night, the mafia elect to kill someone. At day, the town votes to lynch somebody. The mafia win when the town is dead and the town wins when the mafia are gone. The map sports the following features...

• Many combinations of options and role setups
• Lots of custom UI, including a full-feature setup screen
• Customized chat system
• Dynamic tutorial system (optional)
• Carefully-made game mechanics that flow smoothly and react dynamically
• Lots of polish, including a natural day-night lighting scheme and several execution methods
• A lot of other crap that you could find out by playing the map

GravBall by Bounty

The object of this map is simple: pick up the ball with your gravity gun and hold it to score points. To knock the ball out of other players possession, you can toss a grenade at them! Every so often, the ball will get "hot", similar to hot potato, where you need to toss it away, adding some unique gameplay to it. Kinda seems like keep-away to me, but it has that addictive replayability touch to it... Check out the gameplay video below.

Blizzard has released a new short story about a Colossus this time around, as well a brand new poll regarding your favorite male character in the SC. Also worth mentioning, for any of you who were having troubles logging into the Official Battle.net forums, it was likely because you gained the Custom Map achievements. That issue has been resolved.

DS Zone Control by DrakenStark

I'm sure we all remember the old Zone Control maps from SC1... Though, that just used purely Wraiths from what I remember, haha. The port to SC2 has some new units and some cool new things like shared upgrades between team members. Check out some gameplay below. Now, keep in mind, these videos obviously aren't how-to's, they're simply used to show off the map basics. If you're looking for help, use the Help Menu in-game he has setup for that specific reason! If you want to play the map search for "DS Control"

Impossible Bosses by MangledMind

This is an Impossible Bosses map with a nice twist: EVERY ability in the game is a skill shot that is put the test in a PvP Arena. The map also sports custom models from WoW and some pretty awesome animations and effects. Below are two pretty lengthy promo videos for anyone interested. In addition, MangledMind is looking for some testers, so go help him out if you like the map!

Custom Map Achievements by Blizzard

Today Blizzard released live versions of three of their custom maps, as well as project pages: Aiur Chef, Left 2 Die, and StarJeweled. Each mod has been polished, improved, and updated, and has also been given official custom map achievements that are tied into Battle.net. In addition to the achievements, you can also earn a couple cool new avatars. Below is a list of the possible achievements you can gain...

Aiur Chef

• Executor Chef - Cook at least one of each dish in all three rounds of one game of Aiur Chef.
• Virtuoso -Win a game of Aiur Chef. Awards Zealot Chef portrait.
• Supreme Cuisine - Score over 2000 points in a game of Aiur Chef.
• The Heat Is On - Kill another zealot chef when hit by the Great Equalizer.
• Allez Cuisine! - Cook two dishes within 30 seconds of each other.

Left 2 Die

• Live and Let Die - Complete the "Left 2 Die" scenario on Normal difficulty.

SC2Layout Tutorial by Helral

SC2Layout UI files are still very much unused and unexplored as of right now. However, Helral has been actively looking into them for quite some time now. He posted the first UI tutorial not too long ago, and has since posted a more in-depth tutorial covering the following:

• How to hide a frame

Maelstrom TD by RCIX

This is a tower wars map for 4 players, featuring an upgrade system over large tower trees, an innovative (to tower wars) wave mechanic, and heavy use of hard counters to produce gameplay similar to Starcraft's traditional mode in TW format. It also has a pretty legit storyline...

Squad Command by RCIX

This map is a squad-based 2v2 MOBA with emphasis on unit positioning and LoS mechanics, two of which are camouflage and cross-fire weaponry. Throughout this map, you can choose from 4 units: the Commando, the Sniper, the Humvee, and the Cannon. You can read further about each unit and mechanic in his thread.

Twilight Struggle

This is map is a remake from the old SC1 Twilight Struggle map... This really reminds me of Test of Survival, if anyone can remember that map. For those of you who don't, you basically chill in the very middle of the map and fend off the enemies from each corner of the map. The game ends when you kill all the enemies. It sounds simple, but the game was insanely hard and used to take quite some time to complete. You can play the map on US Battle.net or download it from his project page.

Project TMA

Just FYI everyone, Map Nights are today, 7PM CET for EU and 5PM PST (8PM EST for US. Also worth noting, Patch 1.3.1 was released earlier, just a few bug fixes, nothin' special. Though as far as Custom Maps go, it fixed an issue with the Replay/Observer UI. Lastly, Daxxari posted about some Camera changes that just took place in 1.3.0 that you should all know about...

You may have noticed that the Free Camera option is no longer available in the Terrain Editor and Previewer as of 1.3.0. The functionality has not been removed; it has simply been combined into the Editor Camera. We noticed that people frequently wanted to swap back and forth between the two control layouts. Since the two layouts did not conflict with each other, we moved all the Free Camera controls into the Editor Camera. This means that all those middle-mouse commands are available while using the Editor Camera.

For those who never used the Free Camera, it was built for more cinematic-style controls. It works well when fine-tuning a small scene or examining objects in the Previewer. There is a known issue in the Previewer where you are unable to disable the camera’s crosshairs, but if it’s ruining a screenshot, you can use the mouse wheel to send it deeper into the scene. For a full list of Free Camera controls, look under the Camera category in the Configure Controls dialog.

Also, here’s another neat little camera trick: in the Previewer’s Animation menu, you can tell the camera to follow a moving actor by enabling “Follow Motion”. When that model moves as a result of “Show Motion”, the camera will follow. You can then rotate the object or camera to view it from all angles.

Debates of the Ancients by Rodrigo

That's right fellas'! DotA has finally made it's way onto SC2, in the most epic form possible. Rodrigo has decided to expand his Debates map into the AoS genre, of course by AoS he means Aeon of Speculation. The objective of the scenario is for each team to destroy the opponents' Ancients, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called "creeps". As in role-playing games, players level up their heroes and use gold to buy equipment during the mission. Once their Ancients have been destroyed, the game cuts straight into an epic Debate of the game that had just gone on.. Some of the topics you can debate about are: the MVP and LVP, who should have actually won the game, whether or not the game is balanced, whether or not kids should be playing, or even how the weather is... in-game, of course.

One Button Mayhem by boomcallister

One Button Mayhem... Doesn't sound that fun in theory... But then again, neither does Nexus Wars. I have to admit though, after reading a bit about the map, it got me a little curious. Man was I surprised! This is the kind of game that will get people addicted. It's simple and easy, but requires some strategy and skill to win. This map is Starcraft Melee as a one-button game, which offers a completely unique gameplay style. You tap "z" to spawn a Zergling, and hold it down longer to create bigger units. Version 2.0 Beta is now released on the NA realm and it includes all 3 races.

Data Assets by azchef

azchef has been hard at work on some pretty cool Data Assets for those in need. Below is one of his recent works, a unit called the Desalisk, that has some pretty cool mutations. SC2Mapster Community Project by YOU!

nevjmac has come up with a project idea that will require the entire community. This may be a trial as a start of something that might happen a bit more often, so depending on how this turns out, you may see more of this happening. Our first one is going to be a TD (the td's out currently are something to cry about), I have all ready planned out the majority of the fundamentals which you will see be put together in the three areas, Terrain, Data and Triggers. Every aspect of the game is going to be worked on by the community and then pieced together to make one polished map. If you're interested, please visit his thread!

Random Actor Effect by Ultimaswc3

This tutorial explains how to create randomized actor effects. These actor techniques reduce the need to carefully create 'random offsets' in persistent effects or tons of sites and site operations. In this tutorial, basic data editing knowledge is assumed (intermediate level or advanced). He discusses several examples of how to randomize actors:

• Randomized offsets
• Matching actor offsets to effects
• Randomizing actor event chance
• Randomizing offsets in addition to site movers

Simple AI Behaviors by Ultimaswc3

This tutorial explains how to apply data behaviors to units that provide simple but useful AI. In this tutorial, basic data editing knowledge is assumed (intermediate level or advanced). We will re-create two example behaviors from my custom map:

• Suicide Fire Elemental - Attack outward from the ability caster's facing.
• Bovine Warp Trooper - Provides merc. support by following the caster around and attacking things.

As we all know, the GalaxyEditor is pretty damn powerful. With that great power, comes great responsibility... Just kidding, but the power of the Editor makes it pretty complex. That means there are eventually, tools will come out that simplify things, or even allow us to do things not possible in the Editor.

Map Obfuscator by StragusMapster

By far, one of the most sought out programs, because this will help people with protecting their maps. Currently, it only works for obfuscating Galaxy scripts as the obfuscation of Data is much more complex to do. However, those of us that want to protect triggers or scripts, can now do so...

Galaxy Script Editor by SBeier

This is an editor to write galaxy code in. It features syntax highlighting, autocompletion (including definitions made by the user) and error reporting. If you want to use it with some GUI functions you have made, you can copy the script from your map (Data->View script), then write on the function you want to implement, and copy that portion back into the map as a custom script. Beier is also working on a Galaxy++ Language/Editor that will extend the language.

Galaxy Parser by xDSchurke

This is currently just a simple Galaxy Parser, that will validate your syntax. However, this is just a precursor to what Schurke has planned in the future: his own language extender called GalaxyX, as well as a full blown Galaxy Scripting IDE.

Notepad++ Galaxy Package by grim001

Those of you who primarily use NPP, I recommend using grim's package to do so. It includes syntax highlighting and autocomplete on Galaxy and is up to with brand new patch 1.3. He has also included a pretty spiffy dark-looking theme for NPP if you prefer that!

Diablo: The Curse of Tristram by egodbout

I try not to post updates about the same map too close together to keep things fair for everyone, but I think egod's update deserves a little attention. He took advantage of progammer's StarMovie and implemented the original D1 cutscene as the intro to the map, which I think is awesome. Check it out below.

Just wanted to mention, anyone interested can go check out LordAbyss's Unit Comparison spreadsheet. It's used to obviously, compare various data between two units.

Rock, Paper, Scissors by Zarakk

This is exactly what it sounds like: Rock, Paper, Scissors! Zarakk's version of the map will have three game modes: Tournament, Free Roam, and Tug-o-War. Each Mode has a different playstyle, and the map also sports various arenas you can play in. It's pretty simple in concept, but the thread has much more information, so go check it out!

EagleAI by MTops

MTops has been hard at work on this AI for months. In fact, I remember him referring to it back during our Melee AI Contest. Some notable features of his AI are:

• Unit micro (focus fire on weakest unit, use weapon bonuses, retreat wounded units)
• Tactical ability usage (blink, force fields, emp's and fungal growth are all used)
• Excessive creep spread (zerg AI uses tons of creep tumors to make a creep highway)
• Harassment strategies (medivac drops, mutalisk harassment and nydus worms)
• Human-like errors on lower difficulty settings (limited multi-tasking, slipping macro, getting supply blocked, etc)
• Large amounts of strategies available, so every game is different
• Priority based production system (instead of food based)

Official Maps and Mods Pages by Blizzard

Blizzard has just released their Map and Mods section on the official site. Currently there are 2 tutorials they have to show for: one about Terraining and the other on Publishing. Pretty basic stuff, but feel free to check them out, though lots of you will already know this stuff if you're comin' around here! I also went ahead and added it to our Tutorial page in the wiki.

In addition to these tutorials, (and future tutorials Blizzard will put up) they are planning on putting up informative pages about their three custom mods: StarJeweled, Aiur Chef, and Left 2 Die.

Night of the Dead by Ability1

Patch 1.3 Goes Live

Patch 1.3 has gone live this morning, and with it, the new Custom Games system and Editor fixes. To refresh your memory on the patch notes, check out the Blizzard blog.

Customizing UI Changes by Blizzard

Blizzard also released this announcement about Custom Layouts... Keep in mind, we will still be able to override and access after this is implemented.

We wanted to clarify a feature of the UI system that might not be initially apparent to custom map makers.

The user interface in StarCraft II does not officially support the file replacement system where an SC2Layout file in a custom map replaces an existing SC2Layout file found in the Core mod. Replacing built-in UI layout files in this manner can cause many problems. In a future patch we will be disabling the ability to replace UI layout files in this manner completely as it results in undesirable behavior.

However, we understand that a custom map may want to change values in the default UI in order to customize the UI for their particular map. To address these needs we have created the Custom Layout File system. Within Game UI Data there exists an array of Asset Paths that can be used to load .SC2Layout files that override and extend the default UI layout files. This list of custom layout files can be modified in the Data Editor under the field name of “Custom Layout Files”. The custom layout files themselves can be added using the Import Editor.

One of our own custom maps, StarJeweled, takes advantage of this particular system. It uses the CustomLayoutFileArray field to load a file called GameUIOverride.SC2Layout. Frames within this file will override the existing frames and their fields can be changed, or new fields can be added. New frames can even be added within already existing frames.

For example, the CommandPanel within the default UI is overridden in the example below. Its anchoring and height are changed, as well as the anchoring of both the CommandTooltip and CommandButton10. The important part here is the file=”GameUI” attribute which specifies the existing .SC2Layout file that is being overridden, and the name attribute which specifies the hierarchy within that file of the exact frame being overridden.

Hive Keeper by Bibendus

Bibendus has been hard at work on his Hive Keeper (similar to Dungeon Keeper) map since the Beta. Something I thought was very cool is that he posts "Developer Diaries" on occasion, something that everyone can learn from and see how he is progressing with his project. If there were an easier way to do this, I would recommend everyone keep some kind of log on their maps for the public to see...

SpeedCraft by Bounty

SpeedCraft is an 8 player racing map that plays/looks/feels very similar to that of the F-Zero games. Players race around the track while avoiding its borders and other players. The map is set to 10 laps for launch and includes graphical options to make it more accessible to various PC's. Below is a video of the gameplay 7 players.

Doodad Hunt 2 by Bounty

This is the second version of an old map of his that he never released due to some issues. For those of you not familiar, Doodad Hunt was/is a hide and seek type map where one team plays as the seekers and the other plays as the doodads. The doodads must hide as a random object and try to blend in while avoiding the seekers.

Storm of the Imperial Sanctum v4 by ekcolnovkol

I'm sure most of you have played SotIS at one point in time... Many of you debate how epic the game is, but that is besides the point. The fact of the matter here is that SotIS is the best in it's genre, no other current AoS-styled maps really measure up to it. Version 4.0 was released earlier today adding a slew of new things. Below we have two new screenshots for 4.0 as well as a video taking a look at the 3.X series of the game...

WoW Warlock by BorgDragon

This past weeks Weekly Data Exercise has had some pretty awesome submissions thus far. One of these submissions was a nicely done WoW Warlock, with a bunch of familiar spells at his disposal. The video speaks for itself for the most part, just a tech demo of the Data work. Now that said, yes, everything was done in just the Data Editor, absolutely no Triggers! Go ahead and participate in the weekly WDE's or check out the other submissions, :).

Rooftop Snipers by Khalanil

I'm sure we all remember the old school snipers maps from SC1. I have to say, aside from Bounds, this was my second favorite map type. However, this is not a direct port, Khalanil's map offers up some interesting new functionality, like different types of Snipers with varying abilities. In addition, there are also a few different game modes, including the original Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch style.

Galaxy Stack Space by Jademus, Motive, and Deaod

Basically they were playing around with scripting a little bit and were able to unveil some code that showed the author the stack space left in the map, in bytes. For further information and discussion on what this means for us, head over to the thread.

SC1 Greatest Hits by Alphadrant

Our numerous contests are always inspiring sources for mapmakers. My entry "Battlenet 0.2" in the UI Contest gave Alphadrant the idea to fake the entire SC1 UI into a single SC2 map. (honestly the fake UI seems so convincing). Not only faking the SC1 UI, the map uses its own lobby system with the UI to choose 1 among 6 greatest hits of SC1, namely Big Game Hunters (3vs3 melee), BGH Phantom (backstab melee), Art of Defense (team base survival), SCV Football (3vs3 sport), Block the Gate (team control/micro) and Dodge the Rapierist (unit dodging). Find it now on US server for some SC1 nostalgia.
