Hello, friends.
We're launching Curse Premium today and I'm sure some are wondering about the effect that Premium will have on authors.
All authors will have complimentary premium. Yes, this could lead to gaming the system and creating fake projects for the sake of it, but we have a manual approval process, and we will investigate any reports of said gaming. Please, don't ruin it for the real authors. It will be one or two weeks before complimentary premium is provided for authors.
We are also launching our Author Rewards Program (ARP). 20% of the revenue generated from Curse Premium will go towards the ARP. Some of you may have heard about it, but I'll describe it now:
One of the main reasons Curse.com has become so successful is due to the addons it distributes. These addons obviously are created by the addon authors, our content producers. As a way to reward our content producers, we are launching the ARP. We will grant addon and library authors Reward Points (henceforth called points) based on said addon's popularity; for libraries, it will be based on the popularity of the addons using said library.
Points will start accumulating now that premium is launched, but the CurseForge author store will not be available to redeem from until details have been worked out, likely a month from now.
We aren't going to release the full details of the algorithms we use to calculate points, to help limit gaming the system, but the general idea is as such:
- Every day at 16:00 UTC, we start the point generation
- An addon (or library)'s score is generated with our algorithm.
- Score is then compared against all other addons, to calculate the percentage.
- We then multiply that percentage by the amount of points we're granting that day, and grant the result to the project.
- The points of the project are then subsequently divvied up based on the project manager's reward splits.
- Points can then be spent at the CurseForge store to redeem for various items, currently Amazon Gift Cards (we will expand our inventory in the future). Note: we will support some non-United States goods and more may be added on request.
There are some complications with all this, though:
- If you redeem more than 12000 points in a given year, we will need extra tax information from you. Since this will occur for only a handful of authors, we will work with you on a one-to-one basis.
- Due to tax issues and the like, there will be a new terms of service agreement that you will have to agree to in order to accrue points. Our lawyers are currently reviewing this and it should be ready soon.
- For non-United States authors, there may be extra tax issues related, which we should be able to work out on a one-to-one basis. Authors who have already opted-in will have to agree to the new terms of service in order to use the store.
We've already started granting points to authors. To see your points, go to http://www.CurseForge.com/home/ and check the bottom-left.
Update: Authors should now have free premium if you have a project with at least 1000 downloads. The 1000 number should hopefully limit gaming the system somewhat. If you have a legitimate addon, getting 1000 downloads should not be hard to do, especially with the number of users that use Curse.
Yeah,
i know... It might just be me... I dislike the way Curse is acting to the users of WM (and maybe even other free upgrade addon programs?), and the way they try to "buy" off the people who normally makes freely distributed addons, with their "addon download score".
As a Mac user, i had a perfectly working program in WM. Now I have had to change to this Curse instead (If you guys at least could have made it look a bit better?) - And its not even updating all my addons as it should. Some it doesnt know, some was misplaced with others.
The day of Patch3.1 in WOW was a great day for the game, but a sad sad day for the people who use and make the addons. Its all gone bad business, by greedy gamers, and I pity you all for turning it this way. All not freely distributed addons are now deleted from my WoW installation.
peace, out, Elf, the Cookie
How exactly is "Downloads today" calculated? Cuz my addon's total downloads increased by around 40 yesterday, while "Downloads today" was showing 12. Today it is showing 14... kinda sucks.
I have same doubt as colonpowell has. My subscription type reads "Curse Premium (Complimentary)", but the expiration date shows "5/30/2009".
Do I need to do anything to sign up to get curse premium? My little addon had more than 1000 downloads, but I didn't get premium access. Is it 1000 downloads per month? Thanks for the great site CP
So why not offer some specific constructive suggestions instead of complaining?
I would be MUCH more likely to pay for the Curse client if it was more polished. I dont understand how you expect us to pay for something that has always been free, and provide a sub par service. I use almost exclusively ace addons, and run too many to not use the curse client, but i will not pay for it in its current form. Improve it and i would be happy (well not happy but at least willing) to pay an extra $5 a month.
@Gumurak . They first started thinking of this way back when they redid wowace and shut down files.wowace.com. At least a year ago at my count. The WM move had nothing to do with it
Gumurak:
You DO realize that you can still get your addons and still use the client for free, right?...
Yea I uninstalled This is CRAP and I hope more people do the same thing. DO not pay for something we have always had for free. FAIL!
Ok so the real reason you blocked wowmatrix was to plug your paid version of curse. I hope you do understand that all this is going to do is cause people to mail thier copies of addons to one another. And just not pay you. Wish you the best of luck, I would sooner play without certain addons than pay for sub par service. Curse client is 100% crap and intrusive. And has a memory leak in it the size fo texas.
@scrimpy32
Are they working ? Just use the "load out of date" addons options till the authors post updates with TOC updates :D
Fubar is a mess the 3.6 version is great but all the most used plugins are outdated and now its hard to find them at all, we need fu_bar with the corse set of plugins updated please
update your addons please 60% of all addons show out of date in wow
Has anyone used WowMatrix lately they added some things like a "Reminder" when certian addons are accepting donations and even ask if you wanna donate to them. Guess you all did help point them in the right direction, but if they dont strart asking for money (Which I pray they dont) then looks as though they will def. have my vote... I do still use Curse cliant for the few addons it will recognize that WowMatrix does not have permission to use Ever/Yet who knows... Just my input!
@DaveJ1961
The "free version" you've had since September was actually a preview of the premium version.
I understand there was a message in the client warning you that it was not the free version , that it was a preview of the premium service and eventually you would need to pay for it. Been in there since September.
DaveJ961, only because updaters never charged in the past. What if the first WoW updater had started charging right off the bat, would you have a problem with it now? There's close to 12 million people playing WoW, traffic for addons has increased. Bandwidth isn't free, something had to give at some point.
At least you can still use the Curse Client in non-premium mode: outside of patch days, you won't have every single addon needing an update, so it shouldn't really be a problem clicking a few more times. Besides, it's useful just to *know* your addon has been updated.
We had the ability to update all addons and now that has been withdrawn, for me without warning. It's not that I can't afford it but I am not paying for something I always had before. It's out of order...
Im not 100% sure but I am pretty sure they host the file on THEIR server now and still are not charging to us the update all button :)
I realize it would be impossible to distribute points 100% fairly, and I'm not complaining, but I'm curious if the algorithm factors in the significance of project updates? Generally I try to update my addons infrequently with several new features at a time and somewhat extensive testing, as I do not want to burden users with frequent re-downloading.
I wouldn't mind paying if Curse Client actually worked perfect.
If you look at CurseForge.com then the Curse Client currently have like 500 open tickets and very few of them have been accepted. I made a ticket myself about a smaller but annoying problem almost 2 weeks ago. Something that would be so easily fixed. Nothing happend so far and the oldest NEW (but not accepted) ticket posted there, is from Febuary 7th 2009.
@ckknight: I suggest that you go poke who ever is in charge of those tickets at CurseForge.com and tell them to start fixing the Curse Client so that people might start considering to pay for it. Personally I wont pay for something that is not optimized and working as it should.
Fine that you closed WoWMatrix for what ever reason but maybe take a look at what made their product so extremly popular and implement some of that to your client. That would win!
