Have you read any tutorials or used the search tool? Making a unit selection system is fairly basic and requires minimal effort. If you can't do this, I would highly suggest you read up on some trigger tutorials and such.
Also you need to give us an example of how you want your unit to be spawned. Ie, a selector walks into a circle of power, UI selection, ect.
A screenshot of what is happing will help. In any case, what exactly are you duplicating? If you are duplicating extra unit objects, you will get additional unneeded copy's of things.

Although, after rereading what you typed again, if you are getting extra actors and effects linked, it's simply because those actors and effects are part of the ability or whatever it is that you are copying to begin with.
These extra effects may be needed to make the ability work. But again, we will need more information to determine this.
Actually now that I think about it, both of you could make the map. Then convert the maps into dependencies, then import them both into 1 map...That could work. Provided you have enough room for all the dependencies and understand how to do it.
"No", would not be entirely correct. You can copy and past anything from one map to another. It may not be effective, and may cause some missing data if not done properly, but it is possible.
What I suggest to the OP, for two people working on the map, is to come up with a system of who is working on the map when, and make sure you archive the map (create a new file, aka save as) so you have something to go back to if there is a mistake.
What I do with my mapping associate is e-mail the map back and forth, whomever has the latest e-mail has the "live" map.
I have a functional unit with a turret and weapon. Is it possible to give said unit a secondary weapon (in this case melee) that is not affected by the unit's turret?
You can copy everything, although that is time consuming. If you are trying to make a melee style map you might as well just pick a blizzard map and edit it.
As for unit command cards and such i'll give you a few tutorials to look at:
The best thing at this point would be to create a new file, and don't load the extra dependencies until you have created the new file. From there, see if you have any issues.
@Mistrzem: Go
If you want the extra units you have mentioned, add the liberty campaign dependencies. (See attached image)
Also note that not all campaign units are buildable. Some are just placed down for a specific mission. The brutalisk for example, I don't believe can be built. As far as why you can't build anything at a factory, that may be because you loaded the wrong dependency(s) or that you didn't load enough. You'll need to give us more information on that subject either way.

I would try to contact the guy first, send him a PM, try to e-mail him. Doesn't seem right to use someone else's map without their acknowledgement.

Well the turret is associated through the unit itself, not the weapon. I added another weapon and it seemed to be affected by the turret.

Look at the units (missile's) mover, that is what you would want to edit.

Yes, set links two different things together, so it would be ideal.

Have you tried the unit with other models? Although thats probably not the issue but may be worth checking anyway.

It's possible if you created this unit from scratch you did not set up the unit flags correctly as well as the selection and radius sizes.
