When a trigger is called, a thread is being created. For small triggers the thread creation costs more than the execution itself.

This part is wrong!
From what Zanam experienced, it looks like the conditions are being run before the thread creation. So if you have an even that runs very often (unit takes damage for example) but you want to take actions only for a small number of cases (a particular unit for example), you want to add that into the condition part and not using an if then else inside the trigger!
Here's how we see the contest: "You have one month and a half to create any map that has some sort of strategy, send it to us, we are some unknown guys from an unknown forum, and you may get $50!".
If you want to make a good contest here are some pieces of advice:
Do not give cash prizes. We are all making maps for fun, and if there is some cash it now becomes a work and generally the prize doesn't match the investment.
Make a fun contest! "Essentially if it isn't dota/TDs/tag/tug of war.." is not fun at all. You can't compare to the other contestants, no one is going to say "I've got THE idea that will make me win" and give the motivation to do it.
Do not ask for a final product. Making a polished playable map takes a LOT of time and dedication. Most of the map makers aren't willing to spend that much time for a random contest, you have to be Blizzard to ask for that. Instead ask for something light such as a 1min cinematic, a minigame ...
I have removed the Blizzard maps and restrained it to the last 48 hours. The results are really impressive! The top 12 maps are the same. There's only a few ordering issues but it's really amazing!
As you may know, it's possible to get the latest 24 games played by people on their Battle.net profile. I've set up a spider that takes random people from Battle.net and mark +1 on each map they have without taking in account the date.
It gives some interesting stats about what are the most played maps. I will probably update the script a little so there's a listing for the last 7 days in order to be more relevant to what maps are actually played.
About the results
It may better reflect the "popularity" of the maps since it counts 1 per player in the map. So SotiS being a 10 players map will get 10 points per game, whereas a 3v3 game will only get 6.
The players are chosen randomly within the ones that are at least in one league! So people only playing custom maps will not be counted.
There is only a small number of players parsed compared to the player base, so the results may not reflect the reality.

Good luck to all the participants :)

It needs to run for a while before having representative stats, but it starts getting useful!
