Cookie for whoever can identify which film this ridiculously famous quote is from :

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

    Ezekiel 25:17

Yeah, thing is I've had the map run fine after 1.5, but it's only changed to this unviewable state in the last day or two?

There is a backup copy from waaaaay back, but alas, most of the map is missing. The file size is 0KB now, and it seems that the constituent parts of it have been extracted into a separate file. Attached are some screenshots for your inspection. Editor is default editor.

One of the key points to remember is the differences between the Old Testaments depiction of God, and the New Testaments.

The old is a particularly harsh and judgemental God, the new a far kinder and fairer God.

Not saying that there aren't moments of kindness / wickedness in each, but if we had to more broadly characterise the Gods in each section, this is what most people come to the conclusion of.

As such, I find it hard to take the Old Testaments God seriously. I view him more as a construct of fear to enforce laws and rights and as a justification for unlawful acts. The New Testaments God seems to adhere more to what I would call 'Christian values'. In light of this, I would suggest analysing the two sides of God as separate individuals.

Key differences for Science though, is that 99.9% of scientists will not claim something as fact until it has been proved or disproved - God or otherwise - to at least a five sigma level I believe. The other requirement for scientific fact / evidence is that all of its (well, so far) claims can be verified by repeating them. You're not going to doubt the fact that you breathe if you can do it again surely? So why would you doubt the fact the various facts science can claim as they can prove them again? I agree on the point that science can be seen as a cult - no question about that. But, science can and will adopt new practices / theories if needed, something which I believe religion is far less willing to do. And this is both the problem and benefit of living in an organised religious sect - their moral code might be spot on, but quite often it's their practices that are flawed.

I'm not saying it's wrong, just check my example again. Either the basic principles of our language are flawed, the definition of God is flawed, or God is flawed.

To do that God would have to be omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent to name just a few requisites. If however, he is any of these things, he cannot be the others. For example, if he is omniscient and omnibenevolent, then he knows what we're going to do, and loves us so much so as to give us free will. However, due to the fact he knows our path and it's preordained, it cannot be true free will can it? By definition, God cannot be perfect, and therefore, are we not evil or kind as a result of God's imperfection and that of his path being flawed?

What's your view on the idea of the concept of 'God' as, in contrast to being an actual entity, is itself just an idea, however abstract?

/quote You don't get to make your own personal bible edits. Either the King James is the word of god, or it's not. If, as you say, it's not, then don't attempt to defend the assertion. /end quote

You seem to be a fairly intelligent person, so surely you must appreciate the fact that accounts will vary, terminology and meanings will change (e.g. 'wicked' ) and human error will lead to mistakes / inconsistencies in the various transcripts. That being said, I think - in regards to your initial rebuke regarding the point that the Bible is factually and historically correct - you are being pedantic and trying to pick him apart due to him seemingly implying the Bible's accuracy as an absolute. It's important to apply common sense as well as an academically educated mind in this debate.

/quote Been through most of the other religions. Done enough research to come to the conclusion that the bible is factually and historically correct. /end quote

If we are to be reasonable and understanding - as should be the case here - appreciate the fact that it's his own personal conclusion, he only needs to convince himself through his research and that - as you've pointed out - due to the fact we can neither prove nor disprove the existence of the various happenings in the Bible, not to rule them out quite yet. By all means, if science enables us to refute the various grandiose claims in the Bible, then I shall accept the new discoveries with a tip of my hat, until then, don't admonish him based on the seeming incredulity of various stories that have undoubtedly been twisted through human tongue and ear. Again, common sense will serve us well in this debate.

All that being said however, in regards to the original question, has anyone here seen the benefits of organised religion? Whilst I fully appreciate its business like properties, we cannot deny that in many countries around the world people are for the most part better off due to an organised, social focus. For example, I spent many months doing anti-poaching work in Zambia, during this time, I noticed a massive increase in the number of Jehovah's Witness churches. Soon after, in every community where these churches sprung up, crime, STI's and AIDs / HIV numbers dropped, community schools were formed and basic facilities such as clean drinking water were put in place. Whilst we can debate whether or not religion and imposed religion is an honest and respectable thing, we must see the benefits of having what is essentially a spirituality based charity force.

Your only way to become immortal is through children carrying your name and genes. That's the only afterlife I believe in.
