This is interesting because I wanted to do the same thing threw triggers on my map. Here is how I thought I'd achieve this.
Everything is just a number. So with that in mind. Experience is an integer. Level is an other integer. Gold awarded upon death is an other integer. So with that in mind. We could have an action definition that runs when a Unit dies that would check what kind of unit just died. Whom killed it. What level the player who killed it is and apply the appropriate action's. You basically have to imagine the whole engine and try and code it. I believe that is how I'd go about doing this. I'll get started on this on my map and update my progress here.
The whole idea of our mod is the continuation of the story of frozen throne. So we do have plans in making a campaign. But we are not recreating the original story.
Making a lot of progress. Merchant/Quest system is under way as well as the UI which is being worked on. We now have a few abilities planned for our Hero.
We are now 3 in the group. Myself (Lead designer, manager, trigger, terrain), a good data editor and an other trigger artist. I'd really like to get some help on the terrain as well as an other data/trigger expert.

Ow you did more than inspire me. All I know today (triggerwise) Is because of you in some way OneTwo. All your tutorials. I went threw all of them and I tried to improve your coding while doing it. I believe It gave me and edge and for this I thank you. How's Starcraft Universe coming along?
Please share this. I'm making a single player campaign with a diablo style gameplay which would benefit from this by.... hundreds of thousands. If the credits for the model goes to the original makers I don't see the problem lol!!!!

Remember. You really only need 1 trigger. Use Action definitions to achieve the same goal as 800 triggers. Simple always works best!
