Something helpful, Data editor: Game UI Data->AutoVariant. From Snow on sc2c.org.
Great find! Were you able to accomplish anything with this, though? I played around with it, and all I was able to do was to change the name and description of the custom "mode" that is available when selecting the custom "category."
Also of interest is Game UI Data -> Data - Game Categories, which lets you change the name of the default "custom" category, it's description, and which modes it has available. These actually have an effect on the game, but deleting it does nothing. I'm going to try editing these some more, if the actual variants data for the custom category/mode could be edited as well as the names, it would solve the problem. (You could just make that the only category, with whatever name you want.)
The custom game setting doesn't matter. The only time it can be chosen is when you use the "Create Game" option. People who join your map via the custom games list cannot change your game mode settings.
Yes, this is what I meant when I said the custom mode only showed up in "private" games and that in "public" games it was fine.
However, it is important to me that I be able to control the game variants in all cases, whether people are joining via the popularity list or whether they are creating a game and inviting friends.
Note that the "open game to public" button that is available when you create a "private" match prevents further changes to the game variant - does this mean that if someone created a private lobby of your map, changed to the "custom" variant, and opened the game to public, nobody would be able to join? (since the popularity list does not show custom under the category field.) Or would people be able to join, but it is set to custom and therefore broken? Neither case is desirable.
Note that, as soon as you change anything to Map > Player Properties, you will get a Custom mode without any way to hide it. So retards may still set it to custom and fuck up your game. I consider this automatic Custom Mode thing a bug and I hope Blizzard will fix it in the next patch. That should be it for now! Try hosting your game with the settings and you’ll be sure the teams and such are in order.
Information about this: There's a fix to that. It's actually not bugged :p
Just go to game variants, right-click on your custom variant and tick "Default".
Props to Greedape for telling me this.
Wait, am I doing something wrong? This doesn't work for me. No matter what I do, the "custom" option shows up in the lobby, even if I leave the Player Properties windows COMPLETELY BLANK except for controllers. Actually, it only shows my mode in public games, but in private the un-hide-able
"custom" mode shows up no matter what. Any way to get rid of it in private games? If not, that does indeed seem bugged...
I got the same thing a couple different times, it is INCREDIBLY annoying.
I think it is because internally it hasn't registered the ability somehow, so it sees your expression as incomplete.. it's definitely buggy. What I do, is just ignore it and a while later, after restarting my computer, it will just work - without changing ANYTHING about the ability. So, definitely buggy as hell.
Edit: Actually, you can put in any garbage you want into the expression editor and it will accept it - it might change it to something else, but it will at least let you press "OK." This is something that ONLY happens with valid expressions, but ones that for whatever reasons it refuses to allow.
Edit2: And, I notice some people think it's a GUI issue - they are mistaken, it happens whether you use GUI or expression editor. For me at least. I can delete the whole requirement, make a brand new one, create the same expression using exclusively expression editor, and it will refuse to accept that specific one, slight changes cause it to work.
