The NDA is up and I pushed my Press Event report live on Diablo 3. For anyone interested, check it out on DiabloFans! Also worth noting is that the Season 3 ladder has begun, ;).

    SotIS Shoutcast by Crota

I thought this was interesting enough to share with everyone. It isn't exactly a map project, it is a project based off of a map. It's really just here for food for thought, more than anything. Crota, one of the few popular SC2 shoutcaster, has decided to take up commentaries on ekcolnovkol's equally popular Storm of the Imperial Sanctum map. Essentially, if you design a map that players' conceive as the "next best PvP-styled project," then you may become an eSport leader, ;).

I'm a day late (but you can't blame me, I was at BlizzardHQ!), but happy first birthday to SC2! In addition, 1.3.6 went live on the servers earlier today:

    Quote:

Fixed an issue that prevents using Value to set Player parameter in the Modify Player Property function. Fixed an issue when using Unit Can Attack Unit Type function that could cause the game to become unresponsive.

    The Planetary Workshop

As many of you may know, I've recently been talking about getting more Melee mappers onto these forums, and one step I took was to open the Melee Development Forums. I would like to introduce everyone to The Planetary Workshop, one of the first (and biggest) Melee mapping teams that I've seen to date. They have quite a few great melee maps already under their belt, and I know they're going to raise the bar on Melee development as a whole. You can find out more about them in their introductory thread.

Just wanted to let everyone know, I'll be gone on a Diablo 3 press event trip (similar to my previous HotS trip), feel free to keep an eye on DiabloFans.com, ;).

    The Assassins by zeldarules

The game takes place in a populated city. There are 10 different characters in the game. They all work the same, but have different models. Each player will have a different character, and will be given a contract to kill a certain player. The catch is that the city is full of AI controlled civilians that look like the players. You are given a compass that points to the location of your target, but it's not very accurate and will stop working if you get close to your target. This is when you must use your observation skills, trying to figure out who your target is, and then kill them without being spotted. You could just run around the map like a crazy person, but you are also being hunted by another player. So you must attempt to remain stealthy, blending in with the crowd, and avoiding any high-profile actions.

Huginncord, one of Blizzard's Q&A Forum Reps recently posted about known issues in 1.3.5 pertaining to the Editor, which can be seen as follows:

    Quote:

Function: Unit Can Attack Unit Type
Problem: In some cases this function can cause the game to become unresponsive for an extended period of time.
Work Around: Copy the “Unit Can Attack Unit Old” function into your map and use that.
    1) Bring up the library view with View > Show Libraries
    2) Navigate to Built-In > Unit > Weapons > Unit Can Attack Unit Old
    3) Copy the function and paste into your main trigger view
    4) Select the pasted function and modify the Options item on the right
    5) Uncheck the Hidden option
    6) This function is now available for use in your map

    Function: Modify Player Property
Problem: When setting a numerical value for the Player parameter, the value is always reset to zero.
Work Around: Change the parameter Source to Custom Script, and enter the desired number in the edit box there.

    Heavy Iron by Crainy

A planet, torn apart by civil wars, revolts and catastrophes. This once highly populated and rich planet got abandoned by its population and left alone in the universe, now hoovering in space, cold and dead. Shortly after those events, mercenaries used this planet as a hideout between missions. Over time, the planet became highly popular in the circles of criminals and outlaws. Soon, the planet would be the shelter for murderes, criminals, mercenaries and the entire scum of the galaxie. Spaceships would usually seek to avoid this rotten place at all costs.

The planet got left alone by the rest of the galaxy, but then, a spacecraft of the dominion, transporting secret weaponry, got shot down and crashed into the planets surface. All the scum seeking shelter on the planet came out of their holes and ripped the spaceship and its crew apart, everyone trying to get these weapons into their hands. And indeed, they succeeded. Half of the secret weaponry the ship was carrying got into the hands of mercenaries. Now, a war rages, between the survivors of the crashlanding, and the scum on the planet, both utilizing the secret firepower that was transported by the ship.

Now, I understand the following videos are not maps, they are movies, however these are awesome fan-made works that deserved to be seen by you guys. This is the final trailer for freespaces' upcoming animation, set within the Starcraft Universe. It seems as if it may be a sequel to his previous Starcraft: First Contact animation, also seen below.

Pomf & Thud, two popular French SC2 shoutcasters, made a lulzy remake of the SC2 intro cinematic that is potentially worth watching.

UPDATE2: I suppose that means we're also looking for a moderator of the Melee forums. As this position takes a completely different understanding of the Editor than the other subforums do, we're looking for users who are experienced in making balanced, Melee maps. If you think this is you, send me a PM.

UPDATE: Also, if you're interested in Melee Mapping, don't forget to stop by our new Melee Map Development Forums! (Brand spankin' new... Be the first one there, =X).

Patch 1.3.5 has recently gone live on the servers, with the changes that I listed the other day, as well as the NA/LA merger and EU/RU merger. In addition, Mexa has found a few new natives that we can take advantage of!

    Nexus Hindrance Wars by Rodrigo

NHW is similar to the average Nexus Wars map, however there is an added aspect to the game, and that is those cool little laser beam things. The added feature to the game allows you to micro units across lanes, giving the game some strategy, as opposed to the simple "mass, mass, mass win" theme the game has had previously.

Don't forget to Vote Here! for the Themed Creature Contest! Also, you may want to take part in this weeks' Terraining Exercise, where you may have the opportunity to have your arena terrain used in Dogmai's TOFU project.

Project Warfare trailer by Blue Isle Studios

Subsistence, formerly known as Project Warfare, features two unique factions, the United Defense Coalition and the Sentinels with new units, powers, and abilities. Subsistence places great emphasis on single player and storytelling, featuring a brand new campaign spanning battlefields around the globe. Gameplay revolves around capturing and holding resource deposits while building your bases and armies. Upgrade individual mech units with weapons and armour, call in an airstrike or bombard the enemy from an off-shore battleship.

If I didn't tell you this was an SC2 map, you'd think this was Command & Conquer by the amount of custom models, units, etc they have included in this project. From the looks of it, these guys will go far, being one of the very, very few total conversion maps out there. You can also check out more screenshots on their brand new website.

UPDATE: Don't forget, our Themed Creature Contest has been extended until Friday!

    Battlefield Egypt II by Bounty

Battlefield Egypt II is a Team/Class Based third person shooter. The goal is simple, capture as many control points as possible and get the enemy teams victory points to 0! Each Control Point has a timer displayed at its location showing when the next player count will occur. When that timer hits zero whichever team has more players at that point will control it. If there are no players at that point then it will become neutral. Those of you familiar with the Call of Duty franchise, this seems to me like it's a play off of the "Domination" mode. Also FYI, the map is currently available for play on Battle.net.

    Luna by Vestras

Vestras has been hard at work on a Galaxy Compiler that will likely be used in Moonlite, his Galaxy IDE. Those of you that do a lot of Galaxy scripting, this compiler could use some QA work, so go help him Beta test it!

UPDATE: Blizzard has announced their plan for region linking. At the start of Season 3 it will link North America and Latin America, EU and Russia, Korea and Taiwan together. Hopefully all regions will be linked to one in the near future when we have the technology.

    Galaxy Vampirism by KorvinGump

This map implements the mechanics of the classical Vampirism Fire 4.02b of Warcraft 3, but will not be a complete replicate. That in mind, it will only be using the mechanics, all other data, such as units, icons, etc, will be created fresh and used specifically for this project. For more information (and 3 more videos) check out the project thread.

Has anyone been longing for a continuation on the War3 storyline? Have you been waiting for Warcraft4, even? RoarMan and his team of developers have been working hard on recreating War3 on the SC2 engine as well as creating campaign missions that take place after Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. They have a ton of race/hero information on their website as well as a cool teaser trailer below. If you want to leave them feedback, don't forget to drop by their project page.

Just FYI for everyone, i'll be going on a short vacation (will be back Thursday), though I trust the Moderating team will be able to take care of everything, ;).

    Zone Control by playlessNamer

Anyone want a different version of Zone Control from the original? This project will be for you - it's being developed to not be an exact replicate of the original SC1 Zone Control Map. There's several different unit choices with some pretty sweet unique abilities on each, but of course, the original concept is still there... Use those units to take control of the map! I have to admit, I really dig the terrain; someone could totally use that for a Chess map. The video below showcases the terrain and plenty of gameplay for those of you curious about it.

    Fields of Glory by CloudWolf

CloudWolf and his team have decided to make a Total Conversion project, and turn the space-age atmosphere of SC2, into an old-time medieval environment. The map is going to be atwo-teamed AoS map, with each team periodically spawning units that race towards the enemies base via two main combat lanes. There will be 5 Players on each team that will control one of several heroes in an epic struggle to capture key positions, and ultimately crush the opposing forces. So essentially, a medieval DotA! Below is a terrain showcase of the map. For some cool screenshots, check the project thread.

I'm sure we all know what Portal is... What gamer doesn't at least know of the legendary Portal? After the release of the sequel of the game, I was thinking of how I could potentially bring it to the SC2 engine and ironically, Eiviyn beat me to it. Whether or not this becomes a full blown map, this is still awesome. Check out the demo's below, because who doesn't like playing with portals? Right?

I think everyone can remember that old SNES Bomberman game, where you can play with up to 4 friends and just bomb the hell out of each other, right? For those of you who can, and those of you who have no idea what i'm talking about, I highly recommend checking out this project, which is essentially the same thing: a 4-player Bomberman FFA. You maneuver your character around a randomly generated map dropping bombs and blowing stuff up, simple as that!
