Well, I've been playing SC2 since the day it was released, but never really fiddled with the editor much. About a week ago I started as any noob would just by pissing around with terrain and not much else. After joining these forums, I realize you can make beautiful scenes and maps with this powerful editor. So, I started to get a little more serious.
I hope this is allowed, but I would like to start a thread that will be updated every day or so about enhancing my skills, taking advice from everyone, and trying to be in the same league as some of the best artists here. So, here I am!
I only have one screen for right now, but I will be posting more as the day goes on. Please, give me any advice, criticism, or anything at all. I would greatly appreciate it.
NOTE: this images will be from the editor. My computer isnt that new, and running the game on anything higher than medium settings is a no go. I will try my best to up the visuals of the editor without causing a crash.
was just pissin around with the weekly terraining excercise, and whipped something up in about 25-30 minutes. I raised the graphics on the editor to make it look a little better. I posted the same thing in the other thread, but thought i would put it here also. C&C?
The harvesting site looks pretty decent, the only thing that slightly bugs me is those writing boards you used as glass walls. They seem to work or not work with the terrain, I can't quite make my mind up. Have you tried walling off the edge with them completely, or trying proper electric fences? Also, everything on the side of the actual 'site' seems rather boring. You could play with the textures some more, but it mostly needs some more doodad. Last but not least, the harvesting site itself seems a bit hazy. I can't quite make out what it is supposed to 'resemble'. It looks just plain 'industrial' now, which is good if it's located in the background of your map, but bad if it's the main point of focus, like it is in your case.
The Kaydarin site is a lot better, I reckon. The only thing I dislike is the anticlimatic 'skeleton-as-target-of-worship'. It's one of those things that realistically make some sense, but just don't look good. Especially since the skeleton is the same colour as the ground, it just feels like the prime 'object of worship' is just downright missing. I do like what you've done with the cliffs, and how it seems to be an overlook. Also like that you made those metalic buildings work in such a natural environment, though I do think they could be replaced with something that looks cooler, if you'd be bothered to try.
All in all, keep it up, you're off to a pretty good start.
I considered that, but the fact that plants completely seperate the crystals from the site made me think it's more of a prop. If the crystals are the focus, they should probably more larger, aye. Less hidden, too.
Just to give a bit of story on the crystal site. It was abandoned some time ago. And yes the bones were meant to be an old sacrifice. The greyish plants around the crystal grew sometime after the site was abandoned. The energies/auras still eminating from the crystal has curropted the state of the plants thus they are discolored. I had thought about making the crystal bigger, as well as the crater doodad that it is sitting in, but forgot to do it. You cant even see the crater...
Thank you for the replies. As of right now, I'm not really using these as maps. Just one time scenes. When I feel as though I have gotten good enough, I will start to make a complete map.
Thanks guys.

Well, let me take a look, as promised;

@Mozared:
I think the focus of the site was the crystals actually, the skeleton was probably the remains of a sacrifice.
So I would suggest making the crystals more prominent.
