Hi, my name is Brian, and my colleague, Drew and I, and are both in University of Southern California's Interactive Media Department and CS for Games (in Viterbi) respectively. We are planning to begin prototyping an alpha build of a simple SC2 mod and eventually publish it in the near future The following is from the game design document (which is completed as v 1.0), and the most we can tell you without revealing too much:
Back to School: Sharpened, Hardened, and Lean
Design Document
(Brian & Dru)
Objective:
to create a linear narrative dungeon map with single controllable heroes for three players that provides a simple, fun, comfortable paced and timed play, and effectively integrated story elements such as dialogue, cutscenes, and a musical score. Combat will emphasize, and diegeticly satirize, the emphasis on counters, and several puzzles will inhabit the 15 to 20 minute campaign.
Narrative outline:
Classroom RED has always been at war with Classroom BLU ever since the beginning of Patton Elementary School’s inception. But this time, the war has gone too far. BLU has stolen away Commander Tacky’s daughter, Gladis Gluestick, and it is up to three Special Operations units from around the globe to assist in this hostage rescue of epic proportions. Players will control one hero and have to work together to fight their way to save Gladis Gluestick from the clutches of Juul.
We are going to begin work this Thursday, prototyping the lay of the map and exploring the editor tools, and would love to have any interested support in the surrounding Los Angeles area able to make it to the USC campus should we require it, and it is heavily suggested that potential applicants should be relatively local to the University. If you have specific expertise in using the Galaxy Editor (It is my colleagues' and my first time using the Editor), you will most likely increase your chances of being called for co-authorship and help.
If you can legitimately voice act, we will accept voice reels right now of up to 1 minute of dialogue, emailed to the email below in a zipped at or under 25mb size when zipped. It would be best if you were in the Los Angeles area and able to make it to USC campus, but if you have access to studio recording systems, we can work remotely with you if you can deliver on time. Understand, though, no definite action will be taken in terms of active use of your talents, should you be accepted, until we reach post-production phase.
This is a student project, and you will receive co-authorship status/credit should you be "hired." You may also mention the game as a portfolio piece should you be brought into the team. We plan to finish this quickly in under a month, and expect some post-production time in scoring and dialogue recording, playtesting, and polishing.
Personal reasons for starting this project surround my disappointment with the lack of "quality" mods/maps, and instead a list of mostly simple mass spawn/defense/kill kill kill/re-hashed from SC1 maps that never had a cinematic quality to them, or anything beyond a "flash" like game. I found most of the maps on the US servers to be lackluster in potential scope, even though the few gems do contain some great, short gameplay. There is only so many times that I will be delighted by Marine Arena or a "something" TD map, even though they are fun for several minutes. It is my, and my colleagues' hope, that we can create a map worthy of some amount of "literary quality" and play that includes, as mentioned above, dialogue and scoring, and something that may equate close to a professionally made campaign mission.
If you are interested, please email me at [email protected] with a PROFESSIONAL resume and links to any portfolio work, and please use the subject headline: "SC2 temp Back to School application", or the email will most likely be lost. Please apply with the expectation that we will work on a schedule, and expect to get this done in a timely fashion, and scheduled meetings and work-together dates.
If you have any further questions, you can post them on this thread and I will answer to the best of my knowledge.
Once again, if you cannot easily or feasibly make it to the USC campus, it is most likely you will not receive a position, but it is not IMpossible if we are forced to make that decision.
